In Sviatohirsk, two amateur chess players – Vladyslav, 91, and Oleh, 77, – play chess outdoors.

They say it helps them distract themselves from the war.

“I’ve played since childhood. Probably about seventy years now. It’s a game for yourself. Quite an interesting one. Chess develops your thinking, gives you something to focus on. Chess is fascinating,” says Vladyslav.

Their game is suddenly interrupted by the news that KAB bombs are flying toward the city. The players head for shelter.

When the danger passes, the men return to their bench.

“I’ve got the knight in my hand. Sit down. You’re white,” says Oleh.

“The game is the game,” answers Vladyslav.

“He won yesterday – one to three” Oleh adds with a smile.

“To win, you have to study chess literature, study the games of world champions. It really helps. You forget about the war, about the shelling – you think about the game.
We play and think about our moves. We have our own war, that’s right,” says Oleh.
