no other European country receive as much funding as Poland – that’s the only reason

If Poland have same labour shortage as rest of the V4, they could they could use plumbers from UK.

Likely by hard work. Why would it remain poorer than the UK?

that’s an overstatement, being as rich as UK means to have leverage on financial markets and the commercial connections (and resources) of the Commonwealth ; is this article payed advertisement for the Polish gvt?

The answer is simple. Brexit
It’t not that Poland is performing so well, it’s that UK is doing so shit.
It’s nearly as rich if you look at specific stats. You can easily use other stats to paint a different headline:
UK GDP per capita is $52,000
Poland GDP per capita is $26,000
Wow look, the UK is twice as rich as Poland…

This is just the type of nonsense you get from taking PPP corrected figures. For a certain basket of goods things are getting more near. In real money poland is like half of the UK’s GDP.

I welcome the coming of Poland’s EU net contributor age.

I actually find it hard to understand how rich countries stay rich and poor countries struggle so much to become rich. Why is polish per capita income so low, when they’re so incredibly hard working, self sacrificing, and favour education, and the government is so well organized and been investing heavily in infrastructure and research for decades? How is the UK still wealthy at all, when everyone from government down seems to be trying to be actively counterproductive?
(Edit..initially tried to use china as my example, to try and avoid the political point scoring of the article, but thought I better try and stay on topic…but you can imagine I’m really thinking more of china than Poland)

I moved from Poland to the UK nearly 20 years ago now but still visit from time to time and there is no way Poland is richer than the UK.
Yes people are definitely richer than they were when I was leaving but still nowhere near the UK level.

Ferocious PPP/nominal debates incoming, doubtless with zero references to economic literature to argue the validity of one over the other. Not sure overtaking the UK is set in stone for Poland yet (they could converge instead, for example) – Lithuania is growing faster.

Lol, I wish. If I moved to UK right now, I would earn at least 200% doing the same job, and the cost of living is nowhere near 200% in the UK

Poland deserves to be congratulated on turning round their economy from a socialist command economy to a vibrant free market capitalist economy.

What, are they richer than Spain and Italy already (you should always compare countries with similar populations).
Kiddings, even if half of it is true it’s good news. One can only hope the new power house of Europe will use it’s power well and maybe switch from taker to giver.

Every now and then I read such nonsense and wonder if it’s stupidity or if our government is paying for some kind of propaganda. Poland is developing and that’s great, but let’s get down to earth. We’re not even close to the UK. Our development so far has been based on being a subcontractor for Western companies.

I love how most comments here are about rebutting the claim focusing on specific metrics, while missing out on the fact that Poland went from a devastated post Soviet country to a fully developed country in 30 years.
Did the standards of living of the UK went up or down for the average person in the last 30 years? What about the last 10 years?
But this is exactly the type of ‘bury our head in the sand’ atttude that Europe displays when anyone makes one notice that our standards of living are not guaranteed by god, but rather the result of a (once) productive society.
But I’m sure we are on the good path and doubling down on the same policies of the last 20 years will result in a great outcome.

Even if the Poland GDP per capita is bigger than UK it still doesnt mean Poland is richer than UK. Imagine the yearly GDP is the glass of water that you pour into the well, each year since its yearly GDP, …everybody is talking how much water is in the glass, nobody is mentioning the well. And I think there is much more water in UK well than in Polish well.

Sorry but whoever wrote this has no grasp of the (financial) world and is either cherry picking to a very extreme degree or straight up lying.
The UK has a strong financial center known all over the world, has tight relations with and lots of possessions in many former colonies and dominions, and has twice the population; while Poland is a country of agriculture and manufacturing that has no former overseas territories.
About 350k Polish people (2% of our population) are currently in my country of the Netherlands (either Polish nationality or Poland as country of birth), mostly to do menial work (agriculture, construction etc), because the Polish economy just can’t offer them jobs that pay as good. English people generally come over to work in the service sector.
This article is complete BS.

Vodka and good Christian moral 🙂 Any Eastern European country that reduces corruption makes economic jump, because in general people in Eastern European are better educated, work harder, better, and have better working ethics. Also the social tensions are far lesser. The overall thinking is quite different from that in UK, despite US social medias are trying to change that.
