First laid out in the 19th century, Kyiv’s Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) has seen empires fall, names change, and revolutions rise.

This is where three revolutions unfolded — in 1990, 2004, and 2014 — each one a stand for sovereignty, democracy, and dignity.

Since 2022, a grassroots memorial has filled the square with thousands of flags — each bearing the name of a fallen Ukrainian defender.
