Isn’t that illegal?
If not it should be – the right to strike is one of the most potent tools in a workers belt when dealing with employers that otherwise hold most, if not all, off the cards in labour negotiations.
So the agency bin workers they’re temporarily using during the strike to keep the rubbish moving want to eventually become full time bin collectors.
So they arn’t on strike, those particular temps.
The [agency used by the] council say if they refuse to cross the picket lines, then they can kiss goodbye to any long term prospects with any part of the council EVER, as well as kiss goodbye to their temporary job. At a time when they’re trying to start their careers.
The actual strikers say if they DO cross the picket lines they’re going to get a nice old kicking the next time they’re seen around town and the windscreen put through on their car (sorry .. er.. gently persuaded that crossing the picket line would be detrimental to the strikers objectives).
There’s an 18 year old lad in the middle of this who is trying to get some money together to pay his rent. Very ugly.
Are they still on strike? Haven’t heard anything about the outcome of this since the summer
