*From Bloomberg News reporter Kate Duffy:*

Ryanair slashed its winter capacity to Berlin and other German cities by 800,000 seats in a dispute over the country’s aviation taxes and access costs.

The Irish budget carrier canceled 24 routes to nine airports, including Hamburg, according to a statement released Wednesday. Flights to Dortmund, Dresden and Leipzig will remain closed, it said.

High expenses make Germany “grossly uncompetitive” compared with other European countries, such as Sweden and Hungary, where taxes are being scrapped, according to the statement.

They disputed with Spain over (minimal) taxes and threatened to cancel flight connections in July/August. Then, also quite recently, they threatened Vienna airport with the cancellation of routes if they do not lower or abolish taxes. Now it is Germany. Anyway, I dearly hope states, airports etc don‘t give in. Either we are not going to see so many Ryanair planes or we know that Ryanair gambled too high ..

Last I heard, Germany does some pretty dodgy stuff to protect Lufthansa.

Didn’t they do the same with Denmark? Funnily they shut their operations in Billund over tax and so I had to drive to Lego land instead of flying. But now when I look there are lots of flights from wiz air and Norwegian . So seems like run air actually lost a bsae

It’s for the Winter schedule. The same thing every year as this is the slow season for travelling.

Also they announced similar cuts, for the same high taxes and fees reason in France, Denmark, Spain, Austria and other countries.
It’s just a blame game for them.

ah look this headline comes up every single year in October.

What is really happening is their annual winter move around of airplanes and what airports they are based in. Naturally some airports have stronger winter demand than other ones do and they move planes to optimise that demand. When you are running 650 Boeing airplanes of course it makes sense that some of them are going to get repositioned at some point of the year and October is a natural bookend to the summer season and the start of the winter one.

In this instance it relates to 800,000 seats. Out of their total annual 200 million seats. It is 0.4% of their entire capacity. In the grand scheme of things it is negligible and just part of what running a massive airline and satisfying seat demand looks like.

But what Ryanair do (and they do this every single year) is use this operational formality of moving a few planes around to have a swing at either a Government on taxes, their airport operators on fees charged to Ryanair or else their air traffic controllers for their operations. Germany is this years victim, in the past Spain has felt it, so has Ireland, France, Greece, the list goes on.

But the common denominator is that when Ryanair moves a few planes around because their algorithim says its a good time to do so they will always use that media opportunity to target any organisation that charges them taxes or fees. It is all preformative, they were going to move those planes regardless.

Can’t Ryanair just do what they always do – fly passengers to Denmark or the Netherlands etc, and call it ‘Germany’?

Were I a major stakeholder, I’d seek compensation from the CEO directly for intentionally losing business

Looks like I can start a competitive airline against Ryanair now.

Other airlines will be happy to take these passengers. Can‘t get worse than them.

Honestly? Cancel all the routes. Noone fucking cares. Pay your damn taxes.
