EU’s Common Charger Directive requires companies to offer notebook’s without chargers. Due to that Apple simply removed chargers from the new Macbook packages. When they release more powerful M5 Max Macbook Pro, 140W charger it is going to cost 120 EUR extra.

    2. OutOfOriginality on

If only the european consumer could do something about It… Wait a minute!

    3. -ToniCipriani- on

The directive says companies should start selling laptops without a charger to reduce e-waste, while they can still sell with a charger nobody will bother to include it anymore, why would they not take advantage of this?

    4. I don’t see how this is bad? Chargers usually last longer than laptops?

    5. Amokmanden on

…. Under European directive to so. I have 4 usb-c chargers at home already. This is to minimize waste.

    6. JuniorPositive88 on

Everything’s going to be alright, that’s what we wanted, stop the waste. Chargers outlive laptops by many years, plus you can get power strips with integrated 45W USB-C in all shapes and colors for cheaper than an Apple Polishing Cloth.

Yeah this sucks for some people but other people like me have been collecting USB-C chargers. When I bought my first Apple Macbook with USB-C in 2016, I bought a secondary 87W USB-C charger. Now almost 10 years later and two more Apple Notebooks, I have 2 x 87W, 1 x 96W and 1x 140W USB-C Apple chargers. All four of them charge a Macbook just fine. Also my dock that I use nowadays can charge with 90W. So I basically have more than enough chargers. If I buy new macbook and it came with a charger I would just thorw that charger to the other unused chargers.

I know that other people circumstances might be very different and they always sold/gave away the charger that came with older devices. But I think with USB-C it is no longer needed to consider charger and device as pair. It also allows competition for chargers. And a lot of chargers are cheaper than Apple’s offering. Although Apple builds really really high quality chargers, so *some* of the price is justified.

As controversial as this may be, mostly due to the argument that mbooks are expensive so they should include a charger in the box, I already have one that charges at 100W and I don’t see them increasing the power input soon. This also forces them to keep the charging port compatible with 3rd party, so it’s better for the consumer. You are buying a laptop, not a charger. You think that it’s too expensive because it does not include a charger? Don’t buy it.
As an example, I am glad that they do not ship chargers for phones anymore. I have like 20 at home from other devices, from the past 15 years, that are compatible with modern phones, including iPhones. With so many 3rd party >100W usb chargers, I really don’t get why I should rely on the one from the box. Especially since the cable they ship in the box is charging only and no data (this is imho the bigger dick move)

    9. The EU directive to minimize e-waste was supposed to make companies offer products optionally without chargers, in case they already have one.

      – Old price (MBP M4): 1930 EUR (with charger)
      – New price (MBP M5): 1830 EUR (without charger) + 65 EUR (70w charger)

So we are currently at a net profit, but at the same time the dollar has grown weaker, so it’s hard to pinpoint if Apple is ripping us off.

      That’s a good thing.

Buying a Framework laptop I had the choice whether I want to buy with or without a ln extra charger. I didn’t buy one because I already own several.

Almost all my gadgets are USB-C now (Bluetooth keyboard from Logitech is the sad exception).

I’m not charging them all at the same time, so I don’t need yet another one for every single device.

That’s the nice thing about an io standard port that also does charging.

Having to pair particular chargers to particular devices was a major PITA. I’m glad we’re moving was from that stupidity.

Is Apple reducing the price a little bit due to cost savings? Probably not. But Apple users should be accustomed to providing Apple with great margins.

    11. PatriotuNo1 on

I wonder if Apple lowers the price then. Because if not then for the sake of the environment Apple is happily ripping us off.

    12. Charge’r. And this is a good thing, how many chargers do we need?

Please get rid of that idiotic magnet port…ugh.

    13. CafeinDentist on

Bro who tf thinks this is a good idea? Or good for company? Who are these people ? What are they smoking ?

    14. PapaRomeoSierra on

For me… this is fine. We have three MacBooks in our house, two USB-C charging iPads and two USB-C phones. Between them, we only have two big and one smaller charger ready to use, the rest only get used when we travel. But I guess we’ll never find out if the new MacBook with a charger is a bit more expensive.

    15. the_nowhere_road on

It’s a shitty brand anyway. Never bought something from them, never will…

    16. RelevantTrouble on

My monitor acts as a 90W charger, Ethernet port, USB hub, KVM. I have a 60W charger in my backpack for travel. I for one, welcome this change.

    17. Primary_Employ_1798 on

Why buy this, you pay the money and get a rental property with no way to charge it provided by manufacturer, really arrogant move

      2029 Apple remove keyboard
      2031 Apple remove screen

    19. ferdicten on

I hope they can remove that unnecessary apostrophe in the title next!

    20. Technical_Bird921 on

It should be a choice, imo. But it should result in a cheaper MacBook.

With the battery life on the Apple Silicone version, and due to Thunderbolt docks and screens with USB-C everywhere these days, I have honestly no idea where mine is right now, haven’t used it in ages.

    21. _DanielC_ on

Nice play. Now they will blame the motherboard failure on costumers because they used AM chargers.

UK based, was due to get a new Macbook at the end of the month.

Won’t be buying now. Will get an HP Elitebook instead.
