FB and Twitter are toxic cesspools. You expected anything different?

    2. brentspar on

Unless they are giving out about the lads wearing white socks to a Debs, they are just being racist gobshites.

    3. Nyoka_ya_Mpembe on

FB is toxicity itself, just delete it and see how life improves without it.

    4. lIlIllIlIlIII on

I don’t even have to check to know it’s racism. Yet the echo chambers will say it’s not that common.

    5. People from Derry City moving 10 miles to Donegal are considered outsiders….Don’t see why anyone would be surprised at those being from further afield being treated the same.

There’s your problem. It was obvious from the start.

    7. Plastic_Detective687 on

It’s honestly disgusting that we allow this kind of cultural import in our country…

when the fuck did anyone start calling it prom? Is that a regional difference?

    8. Too-many-Bees on

And they are right to give abuse. It’s a debs, not a prom.

Some of the comments under that Reddit post are also atrocious

Whatever they’re saying I just wanna point out, that guy looking slick with the bowler hat down front

I think this is a great picture. A bunch of young people taking part in what is now a proud Irish tradition of the debs/formal/whatever you want to call it. One last blowout with a group they’ve spent the past 6 if not the past 14/15 years together, before they go off to different counties to study.

The paytriotz always go on about immigrants not integrating, but they integrate constantly and quietly and this shows it.

While they racists were terminally online, kicking dogs or lurking around creches – this group of young people grew up together, came through two sets of exams in the midst of a global pandemic and they’ll always remember this night and have this picture to remind them of all their friends.

There’ll be just as much abuse about it in this Reddit thread as there is on Facebook and Twitter.

Different people with different ideologies, but the same blind hate.

The comments are acc so sad. I feel upset even reading them. My younger sister just had her debs and ik she would be heartbroken if she had gotten comments like these. Can’t imagine what these students feel

    14. coffee_and-cats on

Why is it getting abuse? Its a prom and everyone looks lovely. Is the hotel crap or something?

    15. Pvsqvle- on

I live in Letterkenny, I did fitting and alterations for one of the girls in that photo. She herself called it Prom, her sister called it Prom, her mother called it Prom. I’m old enough to remember when it was called Debs here but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore

    16. Throw1awayd on

Kids don’t deserve that kind of abuse when all they want to do is socialise and have the craic on their debs.

    17. WobbldySausage on

Theres looks to be less than a schools worth of students there.

    18. daftdave41 on

Can you blame them in fairness? White socks in a black tuxedo, come now.

    19. PoppedCork on

Donegal Daily knew exactly what would happen, they were more interested in getting engagement, with no thought for how the kids could be affected by some of the shitty people out there.

    20. PrincessCG on

The comments on the Reddit post are getting to be exactly like twitter as well. Jesus.

    21. Gazzzzzaa on

Without reading the comments, is the hate directed at the white socks?

    22. Disastrous-Account10 on

The biggest crime is that the chandelier is off center for this picture, this dude needs to get their bits together if they want to take pro pictures

Also what’s up with Mr white socks lol

    23. Embarrassed-Fault973 on

The biggest problem is brigading, both deliberate and algorithmic.

Someone posts, a few followers jump on, then more pile in. Soon it’s not just locals anymore but random Americans with plastic-paddy energy, racists in the and elsewhere and bots sniffing out rage bait … add it spreads. Every like generates notifications and it keeps landing in more feeds. Then some local tabloid site runs a clickbait piece on it, which gets picked up in forums, and before you know it the whole pile-on has been amplified into a “legitimate” news story and then that starts driving further rage and triggering bigots – it ratchets up and up.

Social media will eventually destroy us!
