Title: EU unveils massive defence plan: **“Europe is in danger”**

      Published: Oct 2025

      Author: VG / Brussels Correspondent

      **TL;DR:**

The EU has launched its most ambitious military plan ever — the “Preserving Peace – Defence Readiness Roadmap 2030”.

It aims to make Europe militarily self-reliant and fully ready by 2030 amid threats from Russia and growing global instability.

      **Key Points:**

Von der Leyen warns: “Europe is in danger. We must protect every citizen and every square centimeter of our territory.”

Goal: Full EU defence readiness by 2030.

      **Four flagship projects**:

      * European Drone Defence Initiative – drones and anti-drone systems.
      * Eastern Flank Watch – air, sea, and border defences in the Baltics and Black Sea.
      * European Air Shield – integrated air & missile defence, plus satellite protection.
      * Defence Space Shield – shared European space infrastructure.

**Timeline**: first projects begin in **2026**, operational by **2028**.

Ukraine to be integrated as “Europe’s first line of defence” with new industrial cooperation and funding — potentially via frozen Russian assets.

**Investment target**: raise joint defence spending from < **20%** now → **35%** by **2027**.

      Defence budgets: €218 bn (2021) → €343 bn (2024) → €392 bn (2025 planned).

**NATO remains central**, but the **EU seeks independent operational capacity**.

Historic first: if approved by member states, this becomes the EU’s first unified, time-bound military readiness plan.

      **Context:**

The EU says this roadmap is necessary because the “post-war peace era is over.” The Commission argues that relying solely on the US and NATO is “no longer sustainable,” especially with uncertainty about American policy after 2024.

Damn, feels like a movie plot! But real talk, reassuring to see a solid plan coming together. Now hoping all EU countries actually follow through.

This is a huge shift for the EU, and honestly, it’s about time. The world has changed. Relying entirely on NATO or the US isn’t viable anymore. A self-reliant Europe is long overdue.

Doubt it will work, it will a FCAS over and over again. A nationalist bun fight over spending and procurement.

      „growing global instability“

      funny how they write Trump

    6. Those non elected officials love war : they don’t pay, they don’t fight, they sure won’t die, they just decide for us.

It’s time for the EU countries to get together to guarantee our survival, or die alone. But we need a joint European effort, not individual projects from different countries.

It’s about time that we start to create an European army that could primarily focus on border protection for starters.

    8. It’s probably still too little and too late, but it is a start

I think that the frozen Russian assets will not be enough: Ukraine, which is already at war, needs them.
So the EU will have to look for other sources of financing.

Why are we building ts, when all redditors say russia is weak?

You guys gonna do anything about the birth rate yet? You do need actual young people to serve, unless you want an army of 60 year olds.

      It is…something at least.

The next several years will probably be spent arguing who is footing the bill, but it is something.

Only a matter of time before this evolved from an already existing European defence strategy, support structures, financially backed agencies and funding entities.

Most of it is already in place. Trump was just the nudge needed for Europe to take the next step in weening itself off American and NATO dependence.

Frankly, I don’t believe 47 has any idea what he has set in motion with his American First including his alienation of traditional US allies.
He’s already lost US soft power. If the EU does go ahead and implement this plan he will also have lost a considerable amount of hard power leverage.

This is not to say the US will cease to be the single most powerful military nation on the planet. But what it does mean is that it will lose a lot of the clout in forming coalitions for its expeditionary agenda and creating allied fronts.

      Good for Europe.

Long overdue. Could have been avoided had Ukraine received enough support in the very beginning.

One problem is that russians are already attacking and will most likely invade this year, not in 2030.
