**USA threatens Norway with trade measures and visa bans**
The United States is threatening sanctions against countries that vote in favor of a UN proposal to introduce a climate tax on shipping. In August, the US issued a direct threat to Norway.
That’s according to the Norwegian business newspaper Dagens Næringsliv.
In a digital meeting with Norway’s Ministry of Climate and Environment, the Americans delivered a verbal démarche — a formal diplomatic communication — to Norway.
During the meeting, the US made it clear that they expected Norway to oppose the proposal and warned that they would not hesitate to take countermeasures if Norway voted otherwise. This was confirmed by Minister of Climate and Environment Andreas Bjelland Eriksen (Labour Party).
“*My impression is that the threat presented to Norway was the same general threat made to other countries,*” he said.
The meeting of the UN’s International Maritime Organization (IMO) is currently taking place in London, where the proposal for a climate tax on emissions from international shipping is expected to be finally adopted.
**“*Highly unusual*”**
Receiving such a démarche is not common, according to Bjelland Eriksen.
“*It’s very unusual. It shows that the US now has a very different approach to international climate negotiations and climate regulations than before. That worries me*,” he said.
On Saturday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy released a joint statement outlining what countries voting for the tax could face. Possible consequences include visa restrictions, fees, sanctions on officials, and even the exclusion of ships from American ports.
Despite this, Norway still plans to vote in favor, Bjelland Eriksen confirmed.
“*There is nothing in the general warnings given to Norway and other countries that makes us change our position. Threats and pressure to influence voting are neither acceptable nor in the interest of Norway or other countries*,” he said.
He added that he hopes countries that have already said they will support the proposal will stick to their decision.
**Norway led the negotiations**
The proposal, called the Net-Zero Framework, aims to reduce CO2 emissions from a sector that accounts for nearly 3 percent of global emissions. The agreement would make international shipping climate-neutral by 2050.
In April, member countries of the UN’s IMO agreed on binding targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. Those negotiations were led by Norway, which has played a key role in developing the framework.
At the time, the Ministry of Climate and Environment described the talks as “dramatic,” partly because the US withdrew.
The meeting currently underway in London is expected to finalize the proposal. It began on October 14 and will continue until October 17.
The vote is scheduled for Friday, but according to Dagens Næringsliv, it could be moved forward.
Norway can make those tariffs go away for the cost of one peace prize 😉
why should their be a climate tax on shipping ?
USA opposes a general tax on large ships co2 emissions on the grounds it wants to protect USA customers from more expensive products.
At the same time USA puts tariffs of 10-150% and increases the cost for USA customers.
USA says its unfair if “the world” agrees on regulation, but has no problem applying https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merchant_Marine_Act_of_1920 to its territorial waters.
Is it just me or is there a tiny bit of hypocracy in the USA.
If the US doesn’t want to help, we need to tariff their goods coming into our countries to offset the problems they are creating for the rest of the world economies and environments.
On cruises makes sense. On shipping products, no.
That level of disdain an treatment has historically been reserved for countries like Micronesia. Doubtful that will work against bigger countries.
Good
That is a clear sign to vote yes.
It is mind blowing how Trump chooses the wrong side of history all the time. Without fail. Every fucking time.
Wouldn’t it help the US companies to manufacture locally? LOL

This truly is remarkable. Our so called “ally” is threatening to place personal sanctions on Europeans who are just acting on behalf of their democratically elected governments.
You may agree or disagree with the Net-Zero Framework but it shouldn’t be the maga maggots decision. Right now we are very vulnerable to this type of extortion.
Europe really needs to start taking digital sovereignty seriously.
Go ahead call their bluff.
They want to abdicate their leadership position and engage in economic self sabotage – let them.
More taxes? Of course, since it is not the lives of politicians that become more expensive
🖕
Yeah? Go ahead. Next topic gonna be about big tech.
The west must abandon trumps America.
Trump thinks he cam make the whole world KOW TOW to his whims and fancies.
