As Christmas is looming on us, just wanted to get this out there to be careful, or don’t even bother buying gift cards from supermarkets.
The cards are being stolen from supermarkets, the card removed, defaced so whoever buys it can’t use it, put back, resealed, and put back on the shelf. Then after you’ve topped it up, they use the card, and you can’t.
I have purchased 2 x Amazon cards from my local Tesco, and had issues with both.
Neither Amazon nor Tesco have any interest in resolving the issue, with Amazon going as far as to call us liars, and insinuate that we have used the card on a seperate account ourselves.
I’ve gone to my local paper/news, BBC Watchdog and Martin Lewis to try and make this a bigger story, in the hopes that someone does something about this. It really wouldn’t take much to prevent the cards being stolen and put back.
If anyone else has any advice on how I get my money back, let me know. Otherwise, just don’t risk buying gift cards!

I don’t understand why would someone steal, use and then put back the gift card? Surely they would just steal and use it

Gift cards as a whole are pointless. Just give people money or buy the thing for them. Why would you want a locked in currency that expires?!

I bought a card directly from Zara and it had zero balance on it. Nobody is getting back to me about a refund. I don’t know where to go next – I’ve rang and emailed every contact I have for them and I’m getting no replies back.

What’s the point of a gift card?
You lock the persons choice to a store if you are using one as a gift and this reduction in choice comes with no benefit whatsoever that I can see.
So you pay your cash out to be worse off and of course the store gains because not every card will be used.
Frankly it seems like fleecing the buyers does not seem such a major crime anyway, the cards themselves are an invitation to a ripoff from my perspective.
