I am a Scout leader and one of the volunteers in one large national Scout Centre. We plant trees every year, around 200-300 saplings. Been doing it for a while now. The forests are really thriving. It’s incredible how many kids are willing to spend Saturday with a shovel in their hands, climbing the local hills, and planting trees.

I’m both heartened to see these conservation efforts, and worried that the placement here might have replaced a valuable wet grassland habitat that provides its own ecosystem services and is also important to a range of species, though they may be less obvious. Hopefully the right homework was done in advance!

Wow the government pays big for reforestation. The couple paid €7500 per hectare, the cost of planting was paid by the government and they receive €16000 over 15 years for every hectare of forest. Seems like a good option for farmers whose children don’t want to farm, or small scale farmers being undercut by massive farms.
