The Louvre museum in Paris announced it would remain closed Monday as investigations continue into Sunday’s extraordinary theft of historic jewelry – and experts say the prospects of recovering the treasures are slim.
In a post on X, the museum said it regretted Monday’s closure, as France begins to digest the implications of the brazen heist in which robbers made off with artefacts from the French crown jewels, dating from the Napoleonic era.
Quite a heist, but the reality is that these artifacts are probably worth 100 or a 1000 times less because now you have to sell them in the black market. And even that will be difficult so now you have to take them apart and it will turn out to be a pretty dumb heist with a low return and maximum publicity.
It was definitely a pay for steal job by some nefarious rich collector dude. That isn’t the sort of thing you fence.
A few months ago, the Louvre workers were on strike for one day. They were raising alarm, among other things, about the poor security lack of cameras and cuts in the staff. The right wing whined: how dare they close the Louvre for half a day?
And today here we are, jewels have been lost and the Louvre has been closed for two days
You only pull a heist that brazen if you’ve already got a buyer. No one sits on that kind of heat then tries to find the 0.01% who would buy it.
10 years ago there was a heist in the Castelvecchio Museum of Verona, and 17 paintings were stolen, among which there were masterpieces by Bellini, Mantegna, Rubens and others. One year later, the objects were retrieved in Ukraine, and given back to the museum, so let’s hope that the ending of this burglary is the same
