Opinion: With yet another in-person summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in the works, the war in Ukraine is reaching a new inflection point. The Kremlin is also signalling that it is more willing to generate risks and costs for Europe now that the continent provides the main lifeline for Kyiv’s self-defence.
As Europe scrambles to deter Russian belligerence, there is one instrument glaringly absent from its toolkit: discreet channels of communication with the adversary.
And yet, something tells me that Russia is happy with the orange orangutan as their intermediary man.

The Kremlin doesn’t care to talk to European leaders. It wants to be seen as a peer to a superpower and will only talk to the other superpower in the world.

EC and Russia have reduced their trade so much that there are enough intermediaries to meet each other’s demands.
The EU cannot threaten Russia militarily.
Therefore, close political communication is no longer necessary.
The only remaining option is Russian tourism to Europe, but this will soon cease.

It absolutely does, but that communication simply wouldn’t work if Europe plans just to communicate demands – putin would just put the phone aside and that’s it. If Europe wants to communicate with him they need to come with some sort of an offer which would be somehow acceptable. I’m not sure we politically can do that, hence there is no communication.

No, it does not. This entire paradigm of Europe playing some masterful diplomacy to get what it wants has miserably failed, and in an era where rules matter less and less while hard power matters more and more, the EU needs its own hard power, including military. It needs to be able and willing to physically resist and push back invaders, and enforce its rules at the very least within Europe.
Like Merkel and Macron who kept negotiating with Putin but in vain? He only understands force. Its that simple.

If Putin wanted to talk he would find ways. Europe needs to set the playing field, rules and produce facts and not plans. That’s completely backwards. You clearly have a player playing by his own rules. If you cannot “convince” him to play by yours, you shouldn’t expect him to.
