Fine Gael really scraping the bottom of the barrel during this election. Proving they are happy to undermine the Irish legal system just to score cheap political points.

    2. This was such a nothing-burger of a story from the second it broke and anyone who is even remotely familiar with the legal system would have immediately understood that.

It’s ridiculous to give it more air time.

    3. Err they have a fiduciary responsibility to represent their clients, this isn’t news…

If a surgeon was running for president there would be someone digging up background histories on all the patients they operated on. Seems kinda fucked we’re here.

Pat Leahy on the Irish Times politics podcast suggesting that Connolly could have just violated the code of conduct of her profession, e.g. by lying and saying she was too busy for the case. Honestly an insane line to take. Also said there was an “obligation” on her to declare that she had done work for banks when criticising banks in the Dáil. Real “finger on the pulse” analysis, not at all out of touch with how the country is reacting to this campaign strategy.

So the FF Minister for Justice feels he has to point out that his party’s recent allies are acting like complete asses. This is how low FG has sunk. They used to be the party with at least a reputation for being relatively honourable and above board unlike the brown-envelope takers and political street-fighters of FF, and now it’s clear that the gurrier element in the party are steering the wheel of this campaign. They are disgracing themselves. Abject and desperate and nasty. Shame on them. Jim Gavin actually has shown more class than FG, even with the shit-show that his candidacy created. Unreal.

So, as a barrister, she could stick to the requirements of the job, adhere to the law of the land, even when that at times would go against her moral compass. Isn’t this exactly what is required of our President? I think she should be pushing this as a reason to vote for her.

To me, I don’t think it’s as simple as just trying to smear someone or anything like that. When someone like CC appears as principled or to have as strong left views it doesn’t match what she stands for. Yes, I’m aware it was her job but I don’t blame people being annoyed by this

Jennifer Carroll McNeill is twisting herself into knots to make this non-issue seem like a scandal: she said Connolly should have “taken the opportunity, as many of her colleagues have done, to preface her Oireachtas remarks – when discussing banks, repossessions, evictions – that she was and is particularly well informed in this area as she has chosen to and represented both financial institutions and indeed, homeowners”

This is like saying that the barrister prosecuting for the State in a criminal trial should have to tell the jury that they represented a couple of rapists while they worked as a defense barrister. And that the judge should have to do the same. And that if they don’t they are somehow hypocritical – even though this is exactly how the system works.

It is actually astonishing to see them try to turn such a basic pillar of the legal system into some sort of conflict of interest, where most ordinary people can see that there was no such conflict. The fact it’s even making FF TDs like O’Callaghan blush should tell you something.
