We are supposed to be reducing energy consumption to fight climate change and instead we are creating gigantic data centres so that we can outsource our thinking to them and have a little tamagochi yes man who kisses our ass all the time… or more accurately so that big corporations and increasingly authoritarian governments can use machine learning to surveil the bejasus out of us until we achieve full on Big Brother.
Either way, fuck your windmills because that’s not going to come anywhere near cutting it anymore.

They should be required to generate their own energy

I am more on the pro side of data centres and think that there is dangerous levels of hype around AI, how much of it is just empty promises will remain to be seen. But when you see the deals that companies like OpenAi cut for data centre access and what it projected data centres needs. (Enough power to run a medium sized cities). There is no way that business is going sustainable.
However there is a need for data centres and even a need for AI, not all of it empty hype. The uses for machine learning are fascinating in areas like running experiments and developing new compounds for treatments in medicine. Not all of AI is pointless slop.

Projections are that between now and the end of the decade the US would need to build 250 nuclear power plants to power the datacentres that are being planned.
For context, there are 94 currently in the USA.
Throughout the world there are similar types of madness. Vast amounts of the worlds electricity is being used to power online services.
All hail the new overlord … AI Slop…
