* US tariffs cut German exports 7.4% in the first 8 months of 2025
* German exports to China fall 13.5%, imports rise 8.3%
So, the story is selling less to the US AND China and buying more from China. Trading partner does not mean they’re buying from you, it’s a measure of total transactions.
Further, this is not new. Also from the article:
>The U.S. was Germany’s top trading partner in 2024, ending an eight-year streak for China.
So, the bigger picture is that the US trade surpassed Chinese trade for 1 year of the last nine, and the China trade is moving to a deeper trade deficit with China. (54b Germany->China; 108b China-> Germany)
And, exports to China fell more than exports to the US, in spite of US tariffs.

Reading the article, I think those numbers are all negative (exports from Germany to both the United States and China fell, imports from the United States fell as well) except imports from China to Germany, something that Merz’s government wanted to avoid and that
>increased German dependence on China but could add to stress in key industries where China has become a major rival.

Meanwhile German exports shrink as they become a vassal state

This isn’t a good thing. The article literally says as much.

Since China isn’t even hiding it anymore that it seeks to dominate technology, manufacturing, and rare earths, the US and EU should be aggressively decoupling themselves from China.
Past agreements with China on fair trade were repaid with forced tech transfer, hacking and theft of trade secrets, and acquisition of EU companies like KUKA while EU was sleeping at the wheel.
I can’t imagine what EU can possibly hope to gain by trading with China? Kicking China out of the WTO is long overdue. Further trade with China at this point will only result in deindustrialization, loss of jobs, and being at the mercy of China’s economic bullying.
