Someone *really* fucked up by not clearly briefing the local police forces on the exercise.

      – The German military was conducting a drill on how to respond to an invasion of a NATO ally.

      – Local residents called the police to report armed men on the street.

      – When the police arrived, the soldiers thought they were part of the drill and fired blanks at them.

      – Police returned live fire and shot one of the soldiers.

      >The drills are being conducted in public spaces

Article doesn’t say whether public & authorities were informed in advance; would be a major screw up if not. Don’t militaries construct fake towns for this sort of thing?

Unbelievable level of unprofessional behaviour. Probably also explains why few people want to join the German armed forces.

Frankly, this news has both good and bad implications. Starting with the bad, there’s the apparent lack of communication between the army and police, which resulted in the injury of one soldier.
The good news is that the German police won’t sleep if the Russians decide to use “little green men” for sabotage.
Because the fact is, friendly fire can kill part of a unit. But hesitation and a reluctance to come under friendly fire guarantee the death of an entire unit. That’s the harsh truth.
