Fines that double each time and freezing rates until they sort their shit out should really be policy by now. If nothing else would force it back into public hands before there is nothing left to salvage

Yet commuters get fined for pouring some coffee into the drains.

Don’t worry though, our “Labour” chancellor insists a “market solution” must be found. The ability for the rich to extract money from us for nothing is not under threat. Phew. Thank god we got rid of the Tories.

Still raking in big profits, still paying dividends and still blowing millions on C suite bonuses.

OFWAT puts more effort into making excuses for these “businessmen” than they do do enforcing the law. The problem is fines and penalties are never enough to deter these kind of conmen.

The only way this changes is if these frauds end up in jail.

We should teach them a lesson and move to different providers.

      Oh, wait.

When there’s no actual cost to polluting (and the fines are very much a rounding error to water companies), and there’s an actual cost to doing it right – and especially when your “customers” don’t have a choice *but* to use you, then companies will continue to pay the fines as a “cost of doing business”.

We need an independent regulator, with real teeth, and that isn’t staffed by a revolving door of ex-water company staff / senior people moving to the water companies.

How about a change in limited liability laws for company executives and shareholders.

If a member of the public repeatedly broke a law, society, quite rightly, would imprison the individual etc, yet for companies who flagrently and intentionally breach laws, rules and regulations, here is a paltry fine, (which is actually paid for by the victims of the companies crime or in the case of Thames Water the government bail them out and fine them and they still pay dividends).

Feel bad for that woman who got fined for pouring a coffee down the drain. If she was on the board she’d have been paid millions.

The CEOs and directors should really be in prison over this, or at least in court and forced to explain why they are failing to tackle this level of environmental pollution. The public are not idiots and we know it is all down to corporate greed, however it would be interesting to see them explain away such corporate malfeasance. It is simply neglect and greed driving all of this, which they are able to get away with because they know they will never be held to account.

Severn Trent got 4 stars, so it shows it is possible for water companies to pollute less.

    12. Make their directors pay these fines instead of their customers. It’s their fault the pollution’s getting worse.
