The Russians and Chinese are already having a jaunt around our waters, and now the Brits want to join too!
United Ireland would pose threat to Ireland by Britain from Britain
Something to do with subs in the Irish Sea ?
Can’t read the article
I missed the part where that was my problem
Dear oh dear, isn’t that just frightful.
ANYWAY….
What he says makes sense and has been discussed for years behind closed doors. He’s pretty direct, Catherine Connolly is going to hate what he is saying but as a nation, we have to face up to the future he is outlining.
He could have also been less of a condescending prick the way he put his points across.
Weird given there is no significant military or strategic infrastructure in the six counties. Did I miss the nukes and stealth bombers or something?
I would love to see the reaction from certain sects of Ireland if the key to a United Ireland was a NATO membership. 😂
Whenever you hear these histrionics about Russia, just remember that in three years of fighting its much smaller neighbour, the Russian military has failed to take Kharkov, a city merely twenty miles from its own border. Russia poses no threat to NATO and trying to tie Irish unification to Russia is going fully off the deep end.
Britain poses threat to Britain from Britain.
I love how England thinks Russia actually cares about them lol
Funding the Irish Times is unethical.
Its an Independent or Sovereign Ireland we want not Fine Gael’s plan to create Unionist Ireland by building up a sovereign wealth fund to reach the requirements for rejoining the commonwealth in 2030:

I really hope the mandatory pensions they are introducing aren’t going to be topping up this sinister sovereign wealth fund. We’ll all be funding the eradication of the Irish identity.
Edit: That’s exactly what it is, but they’ve renamed the fund to “Future Ireland Fund”.

> The introduction of the Auto-Enrolment Retirement Savings Scheme, called My Future Fund, will start from 1 January 2026.
From January we will be funding the surrender of Ireland to the UK.
> He told parliamentarians that Nato should counter the threat from Moscow and Beijing by holding naval exercises in Irish-controlled waters, whether Dublin agreed or not.
That’s a harsh reality of our future
I wonder how many people read the article.
Removing RAF from NI does make it easier for Russia technically as it’s just a straight military downgrade.
Ireland needs to get the finger out and become capable of defending itself.
Guy who worked for an organisation with a vested interest in maintaining the status quo warns against change to status quo.
Ah yes, the all-powerful Russia that is going to invade Western Europe via Ireland for some reason, even though that would leave them stuck on an island thousands of miles from their supply lines. This is the same Russia that has been reduced to using Soviet era equipment now that most of its modern equipment is rusting on farms outside Kyiv. That Russia? Russia’s primary threat to Western Europe is in cyber warfare and democracy hijacking via social media.
I thought the opposite. Can spend more on defending the island of Britain no?

Eh how, we’re reliant on the Brits for air and naval support and have next to no military and we’re not pro-russian by any means.
What does the Russian blue water fleet look like right now and where are they based?
Anyway if the Russians do begin to look like a threat, in future, Ireland can sign a defence pact with China. I’m sure they’d be happy to have bases in the north Atlantic.
How is the Humphreys campaign going to blame this one on Connolly?
It’s amazing how many people dismiss this with very little understanding of military strategy. I have an interest in it and realise how little I really know or understand in the topic. A small bit of humility might be appropriate before dismissing the Russian threat completely.
I think alot of people missed the main point of the article here.
“If anyone attacks Britain, they will attack Ireland. It is as simple as that. Neutrality cannot be seen as conscientious objection any more. If you are part of the free world, you have to be prepared to defend it. The Republic needs to reduce its vulnerabilities.”
This is probably true, a nation attacking Briitain would probably attack Ireland aswell merely for geographical, stratigical and battlefield reasons more so than politics.
His comment about a united ireland is a bit silly but tehnically not wrong, since NATO could loose a beachhead or landing point in case of any hostile attack on Ireland.
That lad must be listening to too much Christy Moore
Join NATO then. Well past time we got off the fence.
>He told parliamentarians that Nato should counter the threat from Moscow and Beijing by holding naval exercises in Irish-controlled waters, whether Dublin agreed or not. He also urged the Republic of Ireland to back military co-operation with Nato.
And these are our “Friends & Allies”
MI5 and the rest of the British state can get fucked lads.
They lost this game more than 30 years ago.
