Belgium “owns” a lot of USA treaury bonds.
The real owners stay hidden. Some are likely Chinese and some Russians.
Can not defend a claim this is the reason for Belgium blocking this, but I can certainly suspect financial reasons has higher value for Belgium than Ukraininan independence.

Doesn’t sound like the Belgium I knew. They used to be a team player for the most part, albeit a little independent at times, in their favor of course. Maybe Russia has made them an offer they couldn’t refuse under the table.

I suspect that the expropriation fell down because the EU did not agree to collectively share the risks. Or maybe this whole ordeal was just theater so that the EU can show the US that “they tried”…
But I find the following quite interesting:
>He also stressed that frozen Russian assets held in other countries should be included in the scheme.
Does somebody has further sources on other frozen Russian assets in other allied countries?

It’s not about the legal basis. It’s about the political will. As you can see, you can even start a war, annexe and occupy other countries if there’s a political will. And no one can do anything, just because they’re afraid. If it wasn’t russia with a soviet nukes, they wouldn’t wait a fucking minute, take the money, bomb the shit out of them. But russia? What if they attack us? What if they won’t give us their money again? Oh, those sweet blood and gas money.

Does anyone know why Belgium is against it? Like what’s their deal? Seems pretty random for Belgium of all to be against it.

Didn’t expect much from a buffer state.

Why not pay interest on it too?

Even during WWII the assets of Germany abroad weren’t expropriated.
This would be a huge precedent and could weaken not only Belgium but the whole of the EU.
I kinda understand they don’t want to do it without some very very solid counterparties.

I am wondering about the reasoning here… banking issues? issue with expropriation in general? legal issues?

They can’t all out seize the assets you guys know this. Russia will take it to court and Europe will have to pay it all back. Yeah Russia invaded however, there is a difference between holding and all out theft of their money.

Imagine not standing up for those being invaded.

That’s cool, Belgium can fund Ukraine themselves if they’re that inclined.
Arcoscope on
This is just not true, Belgium agrees to it under the condition that it isn’t alone in sharing the risk when somebody would have to repay it because the legal framework is shady. It would just go bankrupt if it needed to do that on their own. And there are other countries which hold a lot of russian assets as well, they should participate too.

More like the EU refuses to give Belgium guarantees. But no, let’s paint Belgium to be the bad guy. Isn’t the EU supposed to be a collective, and help each other out? Everyone wants to “work together and share benefits” of one member state’s achievements, but no one wants to be there to share risks in difficult times.

so theoretically, the following is possible:
1. russia agrees to any ceasefire when they can no longer maintain the intensity of offensive
2. russia gets the money out of the EU and ‘merica
3. russia continues war against Ukraine or starts messing with Lithuania

So if russia would occupy Belgium and kill their citizens they still would have problem to get the money form aggressor to repair for what he did?
Shirolicious on
I think its a reasonable ask. There needs to be a actual legal basis to make this possible.
You can’t just “give away” these assets without it. Even when we all understand that its logical thing to do etc. In the eyes of the law you could still loose the argument and have to return it.
However, EU has the power to create a legal basis so just work on that then.

For once my country takes a good decision
There’s no good reason behind this. Should we too wait the same with Nazi’s gold and gently wait for their return ?
I wonder what will be considered “end of the war”, a peace treaty or is just a cease fire enough?
The headline makes it look like Belgium is wrong but if you read the article it makes sense
What an horrible punishment!!
“You’ll get all your money back when you’re done destroying Ukraine and committing thousands of war crimes”.
That’s just like putting your money on a bank (interest is zero these days anyway).
Why not post direct link to reuters, instead of this paywalled article?
