Thats a good read (which I’ll definitely reread more attentively later).

Amusing to recall how everyone eagerly pounced on that ‘Mature recollection’ and co-opted it for satirical japes. A very ‘Father Ted avant la lettre’ moment

I love that detail about Dev making constitutional provision against undemocratic pressure from ’intense minorities’ in the Dáil. Great way to put it, though you shudder to imagine whom he had in mind then.
I wonder how he views these little blisters of irritation nowadays, from his astral drone hovering above the splutterings.

      >The subsequent referendum would not be a simple majority, instead the Bill is only rejected if a third of the entire electorate vote against it – that is, everyone on the electoral register, not just those who show up to vote.

dev really thought ahead on this one

    3. It’s interesting, the two candidates will have very different public-facing styles and messages, but on the role’s constitutional functions, I’m not really expecting either of them to do anything different from the other.

They’ll take whatever the conventional action should be, rather than be an interventionalist.
