So it was all a bunch of nonsense peddled by the Mail and Kemi Badenoch, colour me shocked. She might have misled the house, when she said Jonathan Powell removed evidence…

I feel like we’re seeing the side effects of the Conservatives having lost so much “expertise” or at least “institutional knowledge” over the last few years.
They’ve been pushing this story for a while, trying to turn it into a political scandal. Yet it seems at no point did they stop to check it wasn’t actually all their fault. It was Conservative who set up the China group, it was Conservatives who hired the spy, it was Conservatives who gave him the information, and now it turns out it was the Conservative Government who knew the case was going to collapse all the way back in 2023 – even before charges were brought.
The Conservatives should have known this, and if they had any sense, and weren’t far too reliant on a friendly press covering for them at any opportunity, wouldn’t have set up such a bad own goal.
Although somehow I imagine this won’t get much traction – Conservative supporters won’t care, Reform supporters will say it proves all the politicians are the same (while conveniently ignoring how many Tories are now working for Reform).

So the three act play from the Tories is:
Act 1 – Why did Labour interfere?
Act 2 – Why didn’t Labour interfere?
Act 3 – Oh shit! We’re the ones that interfered.
Absolute clowns.
