It is clear where his legs grow from. He speaks with the voice of corporations that refused to leave the Russian business. Hypocritical statement on his part.

    2. MiSbyPiS on

Using different rhetoric, we could say that using those funds to kick the Russians out is a move toward reconstruction. You can’t exactly start rebuilding a country while it’s still being blown to bits.

    3. Any-Original-6113 on

It’s quite simple: the money from Russia’s frozen assets has already been half included in Ukraine’s 2026 budget.
If it’s not transferred to Ukraine, there will be a €70 billion hole.
The choice is simple: either Europe risks losing its reputation as a safe haven, or Ukraine surrenders to Russia in 2026.

The United States could become a white swan, but Trump is surviving and waiting for Europe to make a risky decision.

So let’s hang out to dry Ukraine in order to stop the war, instead of fighting along them against the oppressor? What f cowardly logic is that?

If Ukraine loses doesn’t mean the war is over. It’s just postponed a few years. Until Russia invades another country. And again and again. The only way to stop the war is to defeat the invading force.

    5. JazzlikeAmphibian9 on

Russia has already effectively sized the assets of the west by not allowing trades on the Moscow exchange is just one example.

    6. muse_enjoyer025 on

That’s the point. Ukraine must win this war at any cost.

    7. jailtheorange1 on

To win the war, you have to fucking continue the war…

    8. lemmerip on

There isn’t going to be much reconstructing ubtil we force Russia to stop this war it started and keeps going.

    9. You can’t start reconstruction until the war is over, we should have helped Ukraine properly from day 1

    10. slitchbapper on

The unspoken part here is the alternative: doing nothing and hanging Ukraine out to dry..
You’d think a country that has been invaded twice and rescued by allies would pick a defense minister with a spine.. but nope..

    11. Remember Belgium has two NMLK (Russian company) steel plants in its territory. The EU has allowed importing Russian steel slabs to Europe under pressure from Belgium and Italy (another NLMK plant in Brussels plus all the re-rollers in the Northeast of the country buying from zebras and others).

The amount of Russian slabs being sold in Europe is stable and even slightly growing. Most of it goes to Belgium. That’s money Russia gets to continue with the slaughter in Ukraine.

Only this week Evraz got sanctioned by the EU. But not NLMK, of course.

      Shame on you, bloody Belgium.

Europe has a real problem with all these weak cowards. appeasement is a disgrace.

    13. tortorototo on

Oh wooooow, so now Belgium minister is parroting Russian talking points. Amazing! How deep in bankers’ pockets are these people?? How about YOU face the fact that YOU AGREED to accept the risk of managing funds of a bloody dictatorship, and now, when things went sideways, you can’t accept the financial loss.

Maybe the god damn EU should accept a resolution to compensate all banks that lost profits due to asset freezes of drug lords, war lords, or bloody dictators.

    14. So what’s sence in reconstruction if russia will destroy it in few weeks. Pay 100 mln for reconstruction and destroyed for 30kusd.
Ukraine needs money to destroy those drone plants, war factories etc

    15. Stewie01 on

The alternative is we pay for it, and I think governments won’t be keen on doing that. So good luck in your current position as it might not last long.

    16. Smooth_Imagination on

Russia steals everything you do in Russia,  its a mafia state. Thats what they do. You’ve never been able to do business with them.

Secondly unless Ukraine can buy defense, it has multiples more damage to repair.

To anyone with an above room temperature IQ the best way to reduce future reconstruction costs is a robust response and deterrant. We are where we are because of drip feeding help.

And EU will likely pay for that eventually.

And if you let Russia win, Russia gains another million odd fighting men for its military and 30 million total population to fund the next war, which will be with EU.

    17. Elamam-konsulentti on

Seize all western business left in Russia, who cares at this point. Euro by euro arming Ukraine is by far the most efficient way to increase the security of Europe, not to mention it being the fight thing to do.

    18. Coupe368 on

Why are they so concerned with a country who’s GDP isn’t even close to the top 10, and that’s before all the sanctions.

No one should care about Russian assets, Russia could disappear and it would have little to no effect.

They will commit offensive action. Regardless. Retaliation is just their way of codifying it as response where before they did not expect it and were hoping you wouldn’t.

    20. octahexxer on

Eu needs to buy that time for arming…russia would steamroll them

    21. NoodleTF2 on

Why are there still Western assets in Russia when it is actively attacking Europe? If anyone hasn’t gotten those out of there yet, they can eat a dick.

    22. VitoRazoR on

Russia has already seized control of companies like Fortum by forcing the CEO to resign at gunpoint. There are ICC court cases about this. Fortum is not an isolated company.

    23. The murderers and plunderers will continue to murder and plunder, trying to not provoke them will do nothing ever. you cannot reason with these people.

    24. Neversetinstone on

So what does he have in Russia that he’s so scared to lose?

    25. ArachnidTerrible9490 on

Fuck the Western assets in Russia. If your money is still there i’m happy if you’ll lose it.

    26. Redragontoughstreet on

European leaders are so incredibly weak minded. If this wasn’t the case this war would be over by now.

    27. Not the first time Uncle Theo has had a very different point of view.

    28. Any cunt dumb enough to trade in Russia…. well… enough said on this.

Ireland will support the redirection of funds to Ukraine working the boundaries of our constitution. Wording to allow for that has been agreed, I believe.

    29. Need_For_Speed73 on

It’d be more correct to say that the funds would help Ukraine defend from the Russian invasion, rather than just say “war”.

    30. DatOneAxolotl on

TL:DR, Belgiums defence minister is scared he’ll lose money.

    31. This type of attitude is similar with the one on the road to 1938 Munich.
Putin don’t care about rule if law. You can not talk or aply the law to someone who is giving shit. You have to force the law on him.

The problem is that NOBODY is seeing a real end-game in Ukraine.

    32. Forever_Playful on

Isn’t that analogue to saying that his own ministry of defence budget is money wasted on potential war instead of maintaining peace?

In this human world to have peace you have to prepare for war.
I’m sure that guys knows it, so it leads me to wonder why he favours Russia in this topic? Kompromat?
