That’s exactly what she said and she’s exactly right. Education is nowhere in the world valued less than in Iceland in terms of income.
She says that middle income people are not getting enough.
She’s claiming that the middle class in recent years have been paying for the higher salaries of the lower class and that education is not valued in terms of money. The eternal debate of raising wages in percentages or set amounts.
She never claimed lower-income people get too much or that middle/upper classes are robbed. She pointed out that recent labor agreements, with fixed-amount raises, have narrowed the gap between income brackets. This devalues education in Iceland compared to other countries.
SA (The Confederation of Icelandic Enterprise) prioritizes negotiating fixed-amount raises with lower-income unions first. Then, they reject alternative agreements with higher-income unions in the negotiations which follow. This undermines your legal right to negotiate your wages.
She argues that lower wages have seen disproportionately larger increases when compared to higher wages, suggesting that SA redirects savings, gained from restricting raises for higher-income brackets, to boost lower-income wages.
I am in BHM. I am so appalled by their attitude, especially given that the head of BHM was a prominent member of Vinstri græn. Shouldn’t labor unions show solidarity with the working poor? I wonder if elitism disguised as socialism is more widespread within her old party.
I hate to say it but I kind of agree with the point that she makes. I am currently studying for a masters degree and after graduation I will get payed less than I do right now. Make it make sense.

I know about a case in one company: A student who has finished 1 year of mechanical engineering gets a summer job where a person works who has finished their masters in industrial engineering and is almost 10 years older. The difference between them in monthly salary is 200.000 ISK.
So yes, I agree with her.
The storyline has been that the poorest should be the main focus this year and in many cases the people just above in “the ladder” have been left out and there might be wiggle room next time. But when the next time comes the same story repeats, the people that have a little bit higher salary have been in school for many years with little to no income and have had major expenses and oftentimes student loans.

If you get pretty much similar incomes, why study, why even try, what’s the point? This is sad. Iceland is already a less attractive place to stay for talents. If this continue, Iceland will fail to produce more talents. Education is important

And it’s not that capital is taking all the money from high earners, but not low earners, Iceland’s labor share of earnings is quite high compared to other OECD countries.
Part of keeping talent in the country and incentivizing talented people to pursue high productivity careers is compensating them appropriately.
