Late last month, the International Energy Agency (IEA) published a report highlighting energy retail prices in Ireland are three times higher than wholesale prices, meaning that essentially companies are charging customers three times more for energy than what they are paying.
According to the IEA, the gap between what energy providers pay on the wholesale market and what they charge customers for the same energy is one of the highest in the world.

Of course. With massive number of renewables you would think we would have one of the cheapest electricity…
Regardless, it doesn’t make sense for electricity to not be state funded. Competition my ass.

Wish I could say I’m surprised.

It’s like a cartel with the state run ESB setting the prices and everyone else just adjusting kilowatt and standing charges to make it look like a competitive marketplace.
If we have an Interconnector from theUK or Spain or France, why can’t we buy from them?

I haven’t read the article, but absofuckinglutely yes

It’s not just energy, food corporations have also used the excuse of the cost of living crisis to increase their profit margins and share holder dividends.
It’s market-wide racketeering unchecked and unchallenged.

Things could get ugly. Ireland is turning into a bit of a pressure cooker nowadays, shades of Weimar with all this absurdity going on

We should get some sort of regulator to look at this. An energy regulator if you will.

This has angered me beyond belief.
We are a two income household that is struggling to cover our esb bills. Why aren’t we marching over this instead of immigration policy????

Yes, the whole pricing model is deceptive especially given the rate that they claim is 30% cheaper. In reality it’s just 30% cheaper than what they “could” charge you.
I’ve had a smart meter for months but havent changed to a smart plan because I’m not actually confident it would be cheaper.

It’s run to make ESB and the useless utility companies a profit.

Might be more useful to focus on things we’re *not* paying more than we should for.
It’d be a short discussion.

Seems to be following the same logic as fuel prices.
*”The price of wholesale electricity could potentially go up 10%, so we’re increasing energy prices by 10%.”*
*”The price of wholesale electricity is down 5%, so we’re increasing energy prices by 10%.”*
*”Someone crashed on the M50 this morning, so we’re increasing energy prices by 10%.”*
*”Niamh from across the road got her leaving cert, so we’re increasing energy prices 10%.”*

Moved from a place where we (fam 4) were paying €600 in utilities per month to our own place that has one of those Air to water systems and the bill is €50 per month – it would be a good way to stop landlords hoarding essential resources (shelter) if it was law that any home up for rent needs to have proper utilities installed, that mean you aren’t paying more in your bills for their lack of investment.

When this Country is starting to make NYC look cheap [and the rents here are catching up to NYC] then this Country is screwed.
I’m on Disability recovering from Cancer and it’s impossible to live here [I said to my Sister that we’re not living here. We’re just existing] My money goes on the rent and trying to keep the lights and heat on. We really need to assess whether to stay or leave.
