I remember reading about this a while back and I’m glad he got some kind of resolution from it.
They wanted a “one woman against the odds” narrative even when it didn’t fit the reality and didn’t give a sh*t if they had to ruin the reputation of someone to do it.

Coogan might as well be Alan Partridge at this point of his career. He’s an idiot in that he literally lost this case by going on Radio 4 and [giving an interview where he admitted](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-63032250) he made the film precisely to criticise Taylor and the university.
Once the facts were established that the portrayal was untrue, it’s an open and shut libel defamation case since he can’t even fall back on the “it’s a fictitious story and all resemblence to real people are coincidental”.
No wonder he settled before going to trial.

Sounds like he deserves every penny, can’t believe they tried pushing their agenda with such a recent event. They’re usually smart enough to wait until there’s no living witnesses left.

Good
How hard is it to stick to the facts? The discovery of Richard III is a marvelous story in its own right, without trying to turn one of the actual people involved into the villain of the piece. Just tell the story how it happened.

I’m generally a fan of Coogan’s work but when the facts were coming out about this it was clear as day that they’d done this guy very dirty in order to fabricate a “little person vs. the establishment” story. Whether it was willful lying or just a lack of proper checking I don’t know. I’m very glad for the academic here.

At least we’ll likely get a few more seasons of The Trip out of this.
