Simon Harris re-invents himself as the hurler-on-the-ditch now?

And he accuses Sinn Fein of populism? What the hell is this?

They could start with asylum, two-thirds of asylum seekers have applied for asylum in a different EU member state before applying in Ireland. There’s probably a case to be made for reducing the number of language students as well.

    4. Harris I think needs to give up the Foreign Affairs Ministerial portfolio. Having the Taoiseach in waiting focusing on countries other than Ireland makes little sense.

      Deport. Deport. Deport.
Rules must be followed, enforce the law.

Obviously everyone who thinks there should be more government-built housing should now go out and riot, as it seem to be the only way to get FFG to change their stance on anything.

Slithery Simon needs a new headline to distract from all the FFG election criticism.
      Look over there!! Asylum Seekers!!!

Ah yes. Copy paste of Labour UK tactics, just echo the far right talking points.

    10. The classic Leo move of stating an obvious issue, pretending that he’s not the one in charge and doing nothing about it.

Failed asylum seekers should be deported. No more self deportations. I say this as a left winger.

Also Simon Harris is just saying this because he is absolutely rattled by the Presidential Election result.

Fine Gael could deport every single non-national in this country and conservative to far-right still wouldn’t vote for him

Sensible migration creates prosperous societies. It’s about find balance!

Has there been a popular “lurch to the right on immigration” campaign from any neoliberal in-government party in Europe that has won seats? I feel like if you want that kind of thing you go for the far right anti immigration party/independent candidate.

Goes to show the serious effect that spoiling your votes by rejecting all candidates but still showing you’re politically engaged can have.

Lads, there only are two options here:

      1. Progressives actively reduce immigration numbers in the most humane and non-violent manner possible.

      2. Progressives ignore the massively growing anti-immigrant sentiment, the riots, the effects on housing, etc., which leads to the far-right reducing immigration in the least humane manner possible. There will be immense violence first at the local level (already begun, think Josip Strok + the riots of 2023 and recently in Citywest), then in about a decade the far-right come to power in the state and enact enormous amounts of state violence against immigrants. Think gunning down boats (Italy atm) and the atrocities committed by ICE (USA atm).

Either we reduce the numbers humanely, or monsters will reduce the numbers inhumanely. We’ve seen both options played out all over the western world. I say this as a socialist, a progressive, and a lifelong internationalist. We need to get real about this.

He then went on to say “we are not going to do anything about it however, because if we did then what excuses could we use for our failings as a government?”..
/s. In all seriousness though, I sincerely this is a logistical realisation that he has made that we have finite resources that cant currently cope with the levels coming in, and not a dog whistle that will ultimately only serve to deflect from the failings of govt
