A bit ghoulish that the solution isn’t fair and affordable rents but to siphon a greater portion of our taxes into the hands of landlords.
HAP was broken from day 1. Abolish it.
Oh look, it’s another story about how landlords are bastards.
The amount of public money spent on rent (HAP, RAS) here is absurd:

Even if you’re not renting yourself you are still subsiding landlords.
A great little country to do business in
You’d want to feel bad for her, but did she ever stop to consider that maybe she wasn’t contributing to the landlord’s retirement fund at the *market rate*? Did she bother to tip him on top of the rent, or provide a Christmas bonus?
Something doesnt add up here
“A young girl who has lived in our rental property since 2017 received a notice to quit due to arrears,” said Cllr Keane at a recent South Dublin County Council (SDCC) meeting.
“She currently receives a €990 HAP payment which hasn’t increased since 2017 despite her landlord raising the rent every year – she already works outdoors over 40 hours a week, and has found it financially hard to cope.”
How much was her rent ? Not being funny but a single girl living alone is she living in a 2 bed gaff in Blackrock or something
Does she get 990 a month from HAP ?, works and still can;t pay rent since 2017 ? that’s 8 years ago. is she still not paying rent ? needs more details. i hate these kinds of articles
So despite the angle some on here are coming from it appears the issue is either the process is broken or she was advised by someone who got it wrong.
““…..she’s still on the old homeless HAP rate. I rang the Dublin Region Homeless Executive (DHRE) to explain the situation and I was told it was not policy to support her with a top-up,” said cllr Keane.
“But instead, this young girl was advised to leave the apartment she is in and be homeless again so she could be paid the higher rate of homeless HAP.”
A spokesperson from SDCC told the Irish Independent that the increase can apply to both new and existing tenancies.”
Every day another scandal. But shur it’ll be grand, no accountability is the norm for everyone now. Doubly so for our political class.
