That definitely looks like moisture which is going to lead to mold. Get in touch with your landlord!

Mold, either mold that was washed off with javel or mold that is building

      Welcome to Germany xD
You will fight that sh*t your whole life here. It’s basically the result of air humidity (which is higher due to no AC) and cold walls (which is a result of low heating (due to high costs)). Do not hope that your landlord or anyone can help you. Actually it is highly likely that the landlord will blame you because you didn’t air out the room enough. The best advice is attack it with all the options you have:

      * heat more if you can afford it
      * get a stronger room dehumidifier (>€200 on Amazon)
      * air out the room regularly (stoßlüften)
      * be ready with Mould Remover Spray on the slightest sign of colored dots (mould comes in different colors, not only black)
      * stay vigilant and check it regularly

Like I said… welcome to Germany, this is your life now…

Looks like moisture is coming through the wall which will basically inevitably will lead to mold. You should get in contact with your landlord asap.

This will lead to mold. In my childhood home we had Walls covered in this. The landlord said we need to accept that and heat more. We did but our windows were shit and needed to be renewed. So the heat went outside. The day we have moved out, the whole flat was covered in mold. The whole house looked like that. We as a tennant had no chance of getting rid of it.
They are still renting the place to poor people tho

Looks like a progression of someone’s ass crack getting progressively sweatier.

It’s moisture, and it will lead to mold. Good luck!

Mold repainted over. Seen it a million times. Lift the paint & paper in the corner and you’ll find a whole network underneath. It’s common in buildings with insufficient ventilation

Note:I just read that these are walls to the outside. So it is the same as in my flat.

Are you on the top floor or is your room one with „outside“-walls? If so it could be damage in there, had that with the flat roof above my bedroom this winter. Landlord got it fixed and the stains stopped spreading immediately.
Also it can happen that houses get new windows for better insulation there, but the landlord won’t insulate the walls also. Then the humidity in your room won’t collect on your window primarily but inside the walls (because they would then be colder than the window). It’s a real thing in my flat and we are constantly on guard with the mold-spray (I can also recommend the one with chlorine).
And „Lüften“! Air out the rooms/room always after getting up and after you return from work. Rooms where you spend much time in should be aired out before bedtime too! If you are allergic to pollen like me get a pollen-windowscreen and air out just before full sunrise and just after sunset.
And get a dehumidifier as support. But it won’t be an alternative to airing out.

Moisture/humidity. Might turn I to mold if not treated

      Definitely inform your landlord.

Is the wall on the outer side of the house? Do you have neighbors right above you?

I had similar spots on my wall because of a small leak in the flat above.

      Best of luck!

    11. First get all the insurances you can. Especially for a lawyer and Mieterverbund or whatever. Wait 6 months for all of them to bite and kick. And then contact the right lawyer to start writing letters to your landlord and accordingly getting the right specialist to check the walls.

The only way to do this shit in Germany is with a lawyer. DO NOT BELIEVE THEIR GOOD INTENTIONS THEY WILL TRY TO FUCK YOU. FUCK THEM BEFORE THEY FUCK YOU AND FUCK THEM AS HARD AS YOU POSSBILY CAN. DO NOT FEEL REMORSE AS THEY WILL NEVER FEEL REMORSE FOR YOU. If provable they knew about this you might get a pay out for health damage caused. Get every penny out of them and squeeze them like you’re trying to ruin their lives. Don’t be the victim, be the winner. That’s the only way to live in Germany.

      Good luck.

You got a nice mushroom farm starting to get going here.

Moisture accumulates at the coldest point in a room, which most often are the corners on outside walls, especially if it’s also the corner of the building (two outside walls meeting). The solution is turning the heat up and airing out the apartment daily.

I see a lot of comments discussing the causes and potential problems and I’ve read them all and it was very informative for somewhat of a “beginner” living in Germany and I want to know what steps I need to take to fix this issue, because this seems like it is spreading to the nearby walls. I regularly cross ventilate the house in the mornings and evenings and the heating of the house is done properly.

One thing I wanted to add is that the windows in this room are not fully sealed when shut, because they open a little and completely (2 “modes” which are common in all of Germany), and this affects the sealing on the sides of the window. I can hear sounds clearly from outside, which means it’s not soundproofed, hence it’s definitely not airtight and I can feel the cold air from the outside leaking in.

      1) I saw a comment that said I needed to be prepared for potential mold growth. I understand this and I will be prepared, but how can I reverse these discolored spots on the walls and in that corner?

      2) Do I inform my landlord about this? Will they be ready to help?

      3) Or is it a better idea to deal this by myself (please bear in mind that I am a student) ? Also any tips/advice would be appreciated.

Air out the room, wipe the walls with absorbing material, use dehumidifier…

In case of mold popping up use HG products…

      Nothing else you can do.
