Of course it is fake.
There’s an early 2000 interview of Putin on NPR (the American radio) where he says he doesn’t mind the Baltic states joining NATO and that every country should think about their defense. Russia was asked for an opinion on the Baltic states joining NATO for almost a decade, and they didn’t oppose.
The “NATO expansion” argument is relatively new and used to partly justify the 2014 Russian invasion of Crimea.
The new president of ireland said nato was to blame for russia using chemical weapons on the uk

I find Jeffrey Sachs’ arguments more credible than anything that comes out of the Macron establishment lol

A Russian friend of mine kept giving me these fake stories from the BBC and other nonsense saying ‘See, Russian news has access to sources other news organizations don’t.’
If you mean ‘Make stuff up,’ sure.

Recently Jeffrey Sachs was on Italian TV and he was confronted by Carlo Calenda, leader of the centrist party Azione (currently part of the opposition to the government), who accused him of being a liar regarding the Ukraine war.
As a result Carlo Calenda was banned from future appearances in that TV show.
Carlo Calenda has been the most consistent supporter of Ukraine in Italian politics.

I don’t understand the pro Putin logic: even if it was NATO’s fault Putin Invaded Ukraine (which it isn’t), Putin is still responsible for invading Ukraine, and killing for many people on both Russian and Ukrainian side.
Besides, pretending that a dictator invaded another country hut it wasn’t his fault is a true display of weakness (russians like string leaders).
On top of this, the hypocrisy is telling: it’s the same logic as slapping your neighbor because in your own view, he deserves it so it’s his own fault.
What is true however, is that Putin pretended he invaded Ukraine to prevent NATO expansion close to Russian border….but ended up expanding NATO to Russian biders (Finlanf for example).
I will say Putin deserves Nobel prize for NATO’s salesman of the year

The original source is from an Italian outlet (referenced by TASS): Il Fatto Quotidiano – Sachs: “Macron mi disse che la guerra in Ucraina è tutta colpa della Nato” (reddit blocks links to that site), on 13 Sept, 2025.
The phrase in question is: *“Macron mi ha dato la Legione d’onore e in privato mi ha detto quello che in pubblico non dice: la guerra è colpa della Nato.”* (Macron gave me the Legion of Honor and in private told me what in public does not say: war is the fault of NATO).

I have actually met this guy. He use to be a yearly attendant / speaker at the alpbach conference which I went to twice when I was in university. He was pleasant in person but clearly an opportunist with a huge chip on his shoulder because he had a big NGO which failed in early 2000s. He will take blood money from anyone who gives it to him while living a cushy life in NYC while spouting stupid shit.
You can check the Alpbach conference speakers from years back and I’m pretty sure he stopped being invited.

Sachs, Mearsheimer, MacGregor, Ritter, and Chomsky are often the names Kremlinbots throw around to show people in “the West” agree with their narratives.
While Sachs is an educated man, his background is entirely in economics, not international relations or political science. In conclusion, he has no idea what he’s talking about.
