Some important things to note:
* Ralph Cassar had a ~7 month relationship with a student (who was an adult). Cassar insists relationship was consensual
* Cassar didn’t inform the MCAST about his relationship
* MCAST is conducting an internal investigation over accusations of sexual harassment and inappropriate conduct, which Cassar denies
* He denies promising the student higher grades in exchange for sexual favours (“I don’t think I told them that. I am nearly certain I never said that”)
* Cassar suspended Secretary General of ADPD, will no longer represent the party in the Attard Local Council but presumably is still a councillor
That’s a bad look. As an educator there is a power imbalance when you have relationships with students. Even if it was consensual just the optics that you could be favouring a student while grading them introduces a complicated conflict of interest. It’s just not ethical.
Of course I hope MCAST conducts a proper investigation and uncovers the truth. If Ralph promised a student higher grades in exchange for sex, while that isn’t criminal, he should be fired. If he did sexually harass someone, then he should be charged with that.
I had friends who had lectures with Ralph and he literally used to cancel them all the time due to being busy with other work.
On another note, Ralph has been quite important for ADPD’s organisation since the AD days. He’s been sec gen for well over a decade and is one of the few people in the party executive that hasn’t bounced around positions. I personally have disagreements with him (less on policy and more on how a party should be run). His suspension will have some effect on the party for sure as he is arguably one of the most experienced party members.
He’s been there for too long. The only party gains in all these years was 2 local council seats – which **is** an achievement don’t get me wrong – but ADPD is long overdue for a shakeup instead of the musical chairs of having executive members change positions.
