      Imagine phoning the police because you’re afraid of a tiny harmless insect. If people are going to waste time and resources so inappropriately, they should be charged the cost of those resources. Same for people who rock up to A&E for a sore finger etc.

      So 85% of missing KFC calls were fake? I would like to see the data behind this claim.

      I also take umbrage to the wording of the headline which seems to imply that spiders are responsible for the missing KFC.

      Ah, the ole Mix in a couple of bangers and then make it seem like 85% of people are time wasters trick, a public service classic.

      I called the non emergency line recently because of a concern about someone on a bridge. After waiting an hour and never talking to a human, I gave up, as if they were going to jump they would have some time ago.

      How is this any worse than phoning police over a tweet? If the police can respond to tweets or reports of a Golliwog doll in a window, a spider or missing KFC doesn’t seem especially ridiculous. They also turn up to auditors filming in public constantly which is a massive waste of time. There does need to be more priority on actual crimes but it’s currently inconsistent.

      Add the cost of having a wasted call (include the cost of the negative externalities) and charge it to the phone bill of whoever’s made the call. Morons.

      Should be a fixed penalty notice for misusing 999. Obviously anything done in good faith shouldn’t get it, but things like the headline should be an £80 fine, that would stop 90% of it.

      I always thought as a kid if you made calls like that you got fined. I think they should introduce fines for miss use.
