Kids find these cool, we’re just old. It’s the “Why are they skating on our sidewalks!!” but they got lazier, fatter and spoiled

In the Netherlands there’s an obligation to wear a helmet for under 16s. All of a sudden, they became less cool.

(This decision followed an increase in head injuries in accidents with these atrocities)

  4. The main issue of those is that a lot of them (are able to) ride without pedaling. This is illegal if they don’t have a licence plate.

Same bad trend as in the Netherlands I suppose. With the cheapest models already available at ~900 euros we can expect to see more and more of them. And of course they’ll be operated by an age group that’s still reckless, doesn’t sufficiently know traffic rules yet and thinks they’re untouchable.

I can just hope this means fewer of those noisy two-stroke scooters on the road. That’s the only silver lining I can think of.

To be honest, i prefer these over loud and smelly scooters.

People too lazy to use their muscles to move around.
I hate them with a passion.

It doesn’t really matter what kind of bike someone rides, does it? I’d try to worry a bit less about things in life.

It’s now even easier to identify marginalen on the road

annoying yes, but I greatly prefer them over mopeds with a combustion engine. And those riding it are the same people.

They’ll disappear soon enough. They’re just fad bikes.

  13. I once saw a kid ride on a fat bike that couldn’t have been older than 10, when he stopped at the traffic lights he had to jump off the thing because his feet couldn’t reach the ground.

I doubt his parents knew because it looked incredibly dangerous.

But the primary concern is that it’s too easy to enable a motor-only mode.

fatbikes – they look sort of cool, they ride quite comfortably.

my kid has one since she has osgood schlatter – a temporary growing defect in her knee.

she still has to pedal but doesn’t need to use force

Almost had a head to head collision with one of these yesterday. This kid thought it wouldn’t be necessary to follow the rules and was ghost riding on my lane. I gave him a good horn and shined my headlights on him. I think he had to go back home to get fresh pants 🤣. Let’s hope he won’t do that again.

as horrible as they are, I prefer them over the loud scooters, so just remember, each one of these replaces those obnoxious little machines :).
