It is not only with busses. Also in your own house. Read this: https://codetiger.github.io/blog/the-day-my-smart-vacuum-turned-against-me/
“found that the Chinese supplier had remote access for software updates and diagnostics to the vehicles’ control systems”
No duh, how do you think the bus gets upgraded?
“Their investigations found that remote deactivation could be prevented by removing the buses’ sim cards, but they have not done this because it would also disconnect the bus from other systems.”
No duh.
“Jeppe Gaard, Movia’s chief operating officer, said he was last week made aware that “electric buses – like electric cars – can be remotely deactivated if their software systems have web access”. He added: “This is not a Chinese bus problem. It is a problem for all types of vehicles and devices with Chinese electronics built in.””
That’s how everything that gets updates from the Internet works.
>The investigation comes after transport authorities in [Norway](https://www.theguardian.com/world/norway), where the Yutong buses are also in service, found that the Chinese supplier had remote access for software updates and diagnostics to the vehicles’ control systems – which could be exploited to affect buses while in transit.
Yes? Bad OTA update can of course break a device (or even a bus).
>Their investigations found that remote deactivation could be prevented by removing the buses’ sim cards, but they have not done this because it would also disconnect the bus from other systems.
Yes, you can always just remove the damn SIM.
Funny, a week ago it was Norway with the same breathless ‘oh no, Chinese can access the busses!!! What can we do?!! Maybe … remove SIM card’.
Now Denmark does separate ‘investigation’ and concluded that the same type of busses from the same manufacturer are serviced in the same way. Wow, shocking.
So this makes me wonder: is it some kind of desperate attempt to lick Trump’s ball, or competition is throwing serious money for some black PR?
Tell them the buses are *chatting* with their company in China, then the Danish government will get that under control in a heartbeat.
I have an idea – don’t buy buses from them… Didn’t the norwegian security authorities warn about those security loopholes.
*what about* … wait wait hear me out, all those American Operation Systems everywhere?
