Cyclists get enough hate, so I try not to contribute, because I’m well aware the infrastructure and car-culture doesn’t respect that mode of transportation in so many ways.
But let me tell you as a new driver who didn’t realize this before… between Ireland’s light levels during winter, the infrastructure, the weather and the post-2020-make-cars-with-their-fecking-perma-highbeam-type-LED-lights, as a cyclist you are straight-up _invisible_ to me without a front light, back light and the additional reflective gear on your person and/or bicycle.
The odds aren’t in your favour, please compensate by spending 25 quid on a full kit that lets me see you and respond to your presence on the road correctly/safely.

Cyclist has lights at least. I’d advocate for reflective clothing too.
A helmet wont help a lot if your run over by a bus though.

That guy is lucky to be alive.
Whenever I cycle on the road I don’t go out without at least two flashing rear lights, front light and hi-vis. It’s silly not to.
I do appreciate cyclists being visible when I’m in the car too. It makes it much easier to be courteous to them when I can actually see them.

Cyclists should of course be as visible as possible. But, drivers need to always be vigilant, too.

Typical Galway cyclist/pedestrian. Saunter out onto the road crossing oncoming traffic … be grand.

Anyone else think; what’s OP talking about? The dude has a rear flashing light if he missed him he’s blind….
Three watches later I saw the other guy 😅

Took me ages to see, cause I looked at the cyclist to the left. Now I see it. That person was very lucky indeed. 😳

I cycle back roads and it’s hairy enough. Wouldn’t be chancing city streets. Was in Manchester there a few weeks ago and streets full of uber eats cyclists absolutely risking their lives for probably not near enough pay. Not a bit of reflective gear or lights on them.

As a cyclist (not by choice but from necessity cycling in to get a train to college) I can feel the inconvenience to drivers when they speed past me with an inch of clearance on an 80kph road. I wear my high vis and helmet and keep almost on top of the ditch when I can, but the amount of drivers who can’t be bothered to spare a second of their trip to slow down or wait for a chance to overtake and just brush past me is insane. Im not on that road by choice, it’s my only way at the moment of getting to a place I need to be.
