It’s time for Ireland and Austria to drop this neutrality charade and contribute to European security. It’s ridiculous that other countries have to provide for the defence of such rich countries.

Until recently the whole of NATO relied on the US paying most of the cost of their defence.

The situation, as preparations for the presidency continue, remains grave. As one exasperated security source put it: “The impression we have is the penny has not dropped and it is the normal Irish approach of ‘ah sure it’ll be grand’.”

      Ouch.

Ah yes. More propaganda trying to militarize a neutral country.

The military industrial complex needs to boost its profits somehow I guess.

Is this the Ireland with a budget surplus from being a tax haven so large it doesn’t know what to do with the money?

If Ireland’s military spending threatens the summit, maybe don’t bother with that summit.

Just some radar, anti-submarine capabilities and a like 12 jets

That’s it Ireland, that’s all you need and this entire thing will go away

Oh please. This is just pure propaganda drivel. Countries hate Neutral countries. Even if we decided in the morning to spend all of our money on defence but stay neutral, they still wouldn’t be happy. We will still help if an EU country is attacked. We voted in favour of the Lisbon treaty (even though we were forced to vote twice). But this rhetoric of Ireland being a threat because of our neutrality and lack of massive defence budget is ridiculous.

    9. Austria It is a former empire torn apart after the First World War which at a certain point They accepted their role of neutrality and rightly did not want to be disturbed any more after so many resources and lands were taken away as much as their military power has been reduced to a minimum. Now, they continue to do exactly that. Now there’s no point in continuing to cry about this.

If you think Russia are going to bomb an EU summit, you are delusional and need to put down the phone. The fact of the matter is Ireland is one of the least likely countries in the world to be attacked by a foreign invader (that’s not the UK) and so massive investment in weapons is a huge waste of resources. Because the Eastern and Central Europeans have justified fears on this issue, doesn’t mean Ireland have to have the same fears. Saying Ireland freeloads on defense is like saying Kazakhstan freeloads on a navy, ie utterly idiotic and incorrect

I hear Vietnam is quite good with their defence by training it’s own people in basics from a young age.

Maybe Ireland would like to take that approach rather than just spending millions even billions on tech that may never be used or in Ireland’s case, might not even have the staff to use them.

Show people how to defend themselves, the basic use of firearms and awareness training.

If most people know how to defend themselves this is a good way for the people to protect themselves from any invaders.

Time for the weekly thread on r/Europe about Irish military spending, I see

i mean why should teh summit even exist if theirs issues about one county shortfalls

    14. I have a better solution. Let’s ban that fucking tax heaven from the EU.

Ireland never shuts tf up but also doesn’t contribute to anything

Yep great idea. After the children’s hospital debacle let’s spunk a load of money on weapons in the middle of a housing crisis. The arms company lobbyists must be delighted how easy it is to get their talking points into the Irish media.

    17. As an Irish person I find our military situation a bit embarrassing. I do get not wanting to get dragged into wars by our ex colonial neighbours. We don’t want to end up obliged to join the rest of Europe in invading another country.

But when it comes to the defence of Europe I think we should be involved. It would be entirely wrong for us to stand by while our European neighbours were attacked.

While technically we are an open door, the door isn’t exactly all that accessible by the nations that would want to use it. At this stage I’d be more worried about the US in 10 years time than Russia. I don’t think Russia is capable of taking advantage of the Irish situation.
