The video looks like the street in Seville near the cathedral. Only difference is that there are multiple underground car parks, and an underground metro under this same street.
You can’t just plonk a tram and magically make all cars disappear. It will take decades and billions for a tram or metro to make a noticeable impact on cars.
How many streets that wide and flat in entire country? 5? 10? What about the rest 99%?
Irrealistic 1000%. The only way to solve the traffic issue is to create an highway system where there are no traffic lights, no concealed exits, no roundabouts, no zebra crossing. The only space is in the air, so…
Trams get stuck in mixed traffic, unless they are given dedicated lanes that drivers are compelled to avoid.
Reducing auto traffic requires a richer investment in transit, but it also requires steep disincentives to driving. Once a better transit network is in place, the government must make driving and auto ownership significantly more costly and complex for most people. As long as driving is “cheaper” and “easier” than a bus or a train, many commuters will choose it regardless of how easy the alternatives are. But both must be implemented together, or else it falls apart. You can’t take away cars without a viable replacement, and you can’t have transformative transit if nobody bothers to use it.
And Malta doesn’t have to have an underground metro, at that massive expense. Consider Honolulu’s new mass transit system. It’s an elevated and automated metro, built much more cheaply than a subway cut through island rock.
Street level tram is called a bus lane.
