Update on the industrial school survivor hunger strikers. Looks like the government has apparently offered some stuff, but claims they can’t meet the original demands because it’s “complicated.”
The original demands were HAA medical cards and the full State contributory pension for all the survivors of the industrial schools that are left alive. They are about to enter their 52nd day on a hunger strike.
This story pisses me off for so many reasons.
Why weren’t these people already provided for if they’ve experienced serious abuse from government institutions?
Does this set a standard now that if you starve yourself to day 51, you may receive some extra benefits from the government? Would it have to be a highly popularised topic at the time?
Why were they even allowed to set up a camp on site? Ive seen camps torn down after a few hours.
