      >The average number of children per woman in Switzerland has fallen to 1.29, its lowest level since records began. The desire to have children is also declining.

The declining birth rate is a cultural problem…

It baffles me that people still think it’s fixable with economic incentives.

High TFR countries have a very different organization of the society and stricter gender norms. I’m not necessarily advocating for that but it’s a fact and as long as we ignore it nothing will be solved.

      1960 population 5m
      2020 population 8.6m
      2025 population 9m

It was constantly increasing so a period of stagnation would be more normal then constant rise.

It looks like in 50 years, the population will be 30% smaller, and they will have even fewer opportunities than we do.

From some older data [it seems](https://www.ubs.com/ch/en/wealth-management/womens-wealth/magazine/articles/the-cost-of-raising-a-child.html) that “Parents spend an average of 370,000 francs per child by the time they reach the age of 21. This does not include the costs of external childcare. Nor does it include indirect costs resulting from a lower income and unpaid care work”.

How do you think the rate would change if parents were given 370 000 CHF for each birth ?

Like i said in Switzerland sub. Dont expect the anti immigration parties to solve this problem.

Even immigrants will eventually leave due to xenophobia.

Your only solution is to break the social wellfare system and revise the pension system or work 996. No one ezcept the neoliberals are willing to talk about this.

You shouldnt have these things if you dont have the demographic capital to fund them.

The west should focus on degrowth. Time to let other psrts of the world become economic powerhouses. Europes time has come and gone. Time for countries like Switzerland to retire.

This way, no immigrants will come either. Fixing the fertility rate should happen naturally.

The country with the 3rd highest GDP Per Capita in the world isn’t having kids, but people still assume the demographic crisis is a economic issue.

My wife and I are doing out best to help with that, but no luck yet. 🙁

Honestly, the best measure the state could take to help with that would be to incentivise remote work. Fully remote work, not just hybrid.

It would give people the possibility to move to the countryside, it would make raising children much easier when you don’t have to plan around being away for 9-10h each day…
