When knee-jerk ‘lock ‘em up!’ mentality meets ‘deport them all!’ xenophobia, right wing pundits start scratching their heads in confusion….
So it sounds like we need prison staff on our list of skilled worker visa’s. Only I imagine it’s not a skill most people in the role possessed prior to getting a job in the prison service. Quite the conundrum. It almost feels like the answer is pay more for jobs in the prison service and recruit from people already resident in the UK.
This actually feels like someone has planted a landmine for a future Reform government. Have people they want to deport in roles that would cause chaos if they tried to deport the people who do them. I guess that’s probably also true for the NHS.
There’s no recent data, but there are typically around 95,000 applicants per year for Prison Officer roles, with approximately 3,000–3,800 positions filled annually. The service estimates that roughly 25 applicants are required per vacancy due to the calibre of skills needed.
Given these numbers, there does not appear to be a shortage of applicants, and recruitment targets could be met if necessary.
Prison governors could consider managing affected officers through overtime or promotions to ensure salaries remain above the threshold. In certain cases, it should also be possible for governors to request performance-based exceptions from the Home Office, allowing high-performing staff to remain in post.

Sure. Undoing decades of mass immigration designed to drive down wages that the public have shown is a major issue (*the* major issue?) for them on pretty much every vote they’ve been presented with is not going to be easy. It might well be necessary, though.
