Ivan knows full well his cute hoorism is on brand like most politics. The locals in Enniscorthy I believe love him. The article drives home the point though, he’s representative of the politics we face. Personally I think he embodies the more problematic side of FFG politics

The thing that no one is talking about, and which is far more important, is the fact that FF were either blasé enough or stupid enough to compromise and impugn our democracy and the office of president by hiring him. This is not a small thing. At all.
Suppose for a moment that Jim Gavin had never withheld money from his tenant so there was no scandal. And suppose that the election went the way FF wanted/expected it to, and Jim Gavin won.
What happens when it comes out that Ivan Yates, working for the state broadcaster on a podcast about the election, giving influential commentary about the election, was secretly involved in Jim’s campaign? And he WAS involved, even if it was just X hours of coaching. He absolutely had a preferred candidate and conflict of interest.
That would impugn the office of president and the electoral process, because it would seem that the winner had a plant in election coverage by the state broadcaster during the election. I’m not even saying that’s what was intended – I’m saying that FF did not respect the election enough not to compromise it in this way.
Part of avoiding a conflict of interest is also avoiding any appearance of a conflict of interest, and the fact that they would decide to do this shows a fundamental lack of respect for our democracy – anything that would impugn the result of the election should be absolutely untouchable. And they did it anyway. I really hope this doesnt just “go away” and that heat is put on FF over this. It’s not just Yates who has a case to answer, everyone knows he’s a slimeball already. FF played fast and loose with the election result by doing this. If Jim had won, we would have had a president who many would see as having come to power, at least in part, in an underhanded way. We’ve never had that, and FF were willing to risk that by hiring Ivan Yates (of all fucking people). I am seriously pissed off by the narrative around this.

Not just Ivan the Terrible.
For example:
‘Mandy Johnston, a public affairs consultant and former Fianna Fáil adviser, is a Business Post columnist and occasional Newstalk presenter. Until 2021, she was CEO of an oil and gas industry lobby group. This is clearly relevant to her strident criticisms of environmental policy. Yet, the Business Post did not disclose it in her August column on the need to undo the influence of the Green Party, which she compared to knotweed.’
Also:
Anton Savage hosts a current affairs show on Newstalk, writes for the Business Post and is a director of the Communications Clinic, a communications, media training and PR firm chaired by his mother, Terry Prone. The company website offers experts who can generate positive media coverage . The profile for Savage notes he has advised cabinet ministers and CEOs and is a constant presence on radio and TV .

Ireland is too small for a genuine separation of politics and media/PR/lobbies. The best we can hope for is full disclosure.
Every time Terry Prone is on her son’s radio show that should be flagged by the host.
