that was quick… This is why I laughed with pro-China people say China “don’t need the US and will just replace the US market by trading with the rest of the world.”

Turns out, its not that simple and other countries also aren’t fans of China dumping cheap products into their countries that would decimate domestic industries…

I remember people laughing at and criticizing the US for getting rid of its De Minimis rule. Turns out, that was really smart. Dropshipping has always been a problem and now, finally, the EU is doing something about it.

Politicians just approved another measure to line their, and their rich friends pockets, fantastic.

    4. MightyHydrar on

Ok, I get stopping the flood of cheap chinese crap, but this is going to hit so many other international small businesses badly too, especially with the US having also already cancelled their de minimis rule.

I’ve ordered things from a Ukrainian company a few times, always under 150 Euro (though not by much), and those orders are about to become even more expensive now. Ugh.

    5. Bloomhunger on

Finally. The cost alone of handling all that garbage produced should be offset somehow (not to mention all the pollution making and transporting it).

    6. Nice-Appearance-9720 on

Awesome, now we can buy the same stuff from Lidl on a sale…

    7. noethehoe on

I understand why this is happening and think it was about time we put some kind of stop to all the slop importing.

At the same time it’s a little annoying knowing that this will make buying small stuff you can’t find elsewhere (e.g. keychains) more expensive.

    8. PizzaJesus6 on

Oh my god thank you! Finally some measures to stop stupid people like my cousin from ordering cheap chinese garbage online instead of getting off their asses and buying from the local corner store.

    9. transplantpdxxx on

The EU does whatever the US wants. Your pols hate you and your freedoms.

    10. conmeonemo on

Congratulations. Chinese slop will now be sold by normal stores, that will charge X5.

Half of the stores for home appliance or supermarkets are already full of slop, because people like it and it’s high margins.

      >Europeans are not allowed to buy affordable products

      Thank you EU!

First the gas, now everyday stuff.

      Take that ~~Putin~~ Xi!

    12. Caramel-Foreign on

Now you’ll have to buy the 5 times more expensive exactly same items but imported by some huge company. Which has well paid accountants making sure will never pay tax from that profit

    13. Jane_Doe_32 on

Thanks to the EU for telling us how and where we can spend our money, plus measures like chat controls that are improving every day ^^

    14. blackcoffee17 on

They already have warehouses in EU and will just ship from EU.

    15. Julian679 on

Wonder how its gonna be priced.

They removed VAT exemption 4 years ago, so my country is getting paid when i buy stuff regardless. But thats obviously not enough. Same products are sold by importers for 5-10x the price so they must close the gap?

    16. _CatLover_ on

Same EU who criticized Trump for putting tariffs on Chinese imports which just forced people to buy the more expensive domestic stuff? (In this case just imported by a retailer instead and sold at 5x the price)

But now that we do it it’s totally cool and based?

    17. legitematehorse on

Oh great! Now I can pay double for my stuff with no alternative.

    18. This is a pretty bad idea, I live in a poorer country and the cheap stuff you get off temu and AliExpress, like electronic components, phone cases, and even flashlights that are not as insanely expensive as they are in stores.

    19. utarohashimoto on

      Fuck Shein and TEMU!

I will absolutely pay 10X for the made-in-china stuff if they first go through a European middleman.

    20. FieldMarchalQ on

AliExpress already add EU specific VAT to every order, don’t know why they can’t force Temu and Shein to do the same?

    21. nariofthewind on

I look at my Amazon haul and what I so often find now in the supermarket next to me and I kind of understand why…

    22. The__Other on

People are only saying that we will pay X% more to resellers for the products, but this is not the only problem.

The reality is that in the EU, you will find just a small percentage of all the goods from Temu, AliExpress, and Shein. And this is the most important loss.
It is so silly to see people being happy about those measures, which will require them to pay more money for a limited variety of products.

    23. ValiumBlues on

So, will they “simply” add local VAT + customs fees to all those €10 AliExpress orders?

      I’m genuinely curious.

    24. SkyburnerTheBest on

These actions should be targeted at Shein and Temu specifically, not at every single seller from outside the EU. It’s very unfair. If I wanna buy a mousepad from Japan now I am gonna get hit with extra customs???

    25. leaflock7 on

yeah, another great move from EU.
now you have to pay more for the cheap stuff and guess what, the now expensive European ones will get even more expensive .
      what a thought!!

    26. BahnSprueher on

So now I gotta pay more on my monthly orders from japan, why am I getting punished?

    27. -SineNomine- on

I’m not sure if making everythin from electric cars to standard consumer products more expensive to the average consumer is saving democracy – the EU probably accelerates Europes decline into populism and irrelevance.

    28. freesk8r on

Meanwhile, you can find all kinds of fake bags laid out on carpets in random streets of Spain or Italy, and no one cares.

    29. America-always-great on

Everyone, people are getting g tired of China doing industry wide dumping. So much garbage is made they just can’t stop or their economy falls apart.

    30. MercantileReptile on

“Stuff is expensive everywhere, prices going through the roof. People don’t have the money.”

“Let us make some smaller purchases more expensive, that’ll help!”
