The advice this year, now more than ever, is to shop around for the best value.

I actually just launched an Irish deals site (stardeals.ie) last week to help with exactly this – specifically focused on deals that actually work for Irish shoppers. We’ve had about 200 people sign up and the community’s been posting 30-40 deals daily already.

Full disclosure – it’s my site, so I’m obviously biased, but I genuinely think it could help people stretch their budget for Christmas. Not trying to spam, just thought it was relevant given the thread.

It is not just Christmas that is going to be tight those costs will be there after Christmas. I am hoping not to have spend a bunch this year, but it is tough not to. I always feel that there is a pressure to keep up with the neighbours but I seriously no longer care. But not everyone else feels the same.

I suppose that the other side of the coin is that there is some businesses out there that only make real money in this period and the rest of the year just keep the lights on. Those businesses will be in trouble if people spend less.

At least they’re acknowledging that it’s prices instead of pretending it’s costs.
