They’ve been banging on about the new plate reading tech (new in Ireland that is) for a while. So is that actually BS or just for insurance?

Of course if your car is not taxed currently but has been then at some point you’ll either have to pay up or take it off the road so any avoidance is temporary in the great majority of cases, no?

im pretty sure the gardai have this information to hand which is where it really matters.

Actually just realised I should have done it two weeks ago… I’ll do it now

But how could you track it? They know how many cars are taxed, but it’s not possible to know exactly how many cars are on the road, because cars can leave the State, enter the State, be laid up without the authorities being told (even if people should inform them).

This just says they don’t have an exact count of noncompliant cars on the road.

They presumably still can check any given reg detected on the road to see if that specific reg is compliant.

Surely it’s just a case of “how many cars are currently registered vs how many car tax payment have been received”

Cars not on the road are declared off the road, to their department. The ones they aren’t capturing in that aren’t evading tax either.

  7. A tax that is too expensive to collect. Abolish it and add 10c per liter of fuel. Collected from the retailers.

One less job for gardai to do and decoupled from the legacy engine size/carbon systems.

Fairer tax on everyone as people who drive more, consume more and pollute more – regardless of the green washing technology added to ICE cars – pay more.

How about we start with not allowing people to wander in the country with no ID!
