  1. Probably the best Minister for Finance we have ever had. Will be a big loss.

Was inevitable though when he didn’t run to be leader of FG when Leo stepped down.

Fair play to him, the only downside if finding anyone qualified from the bunch of FFG spanners who are left behind.

Was only a matter of time, thought he might wait for the IMF role which would be coming up around the time of next election. He’s very highly thought of on the international stage, no mean feat for an Irish Minister for Finance only 15 years after we were one of the laughing stocks of Europe with the bailout. Might be one of the biggest jobs an Irish politician has got on the world stage in recent times – Mary Robinson as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights or Peter Sutherland as DG for the World Trade Organisation are only others that come to mind.

Really hope this doesn’t mean we get Malachy Steenson in on a protest vote. Can someone text the Monk and see if he’s up for splitting that vote again?

Despite the state of housing etc, i get the feeling he will be a big loss. I always liked him, if not his politics – but he has a big brain and is genuine, but i guess it will help Ireland’s soft power.

Is there any penalty on the benefits of an elected representative resigning for a personal career move?

Sayonara Paschal. Easily the most pretentious finance minister we’ve ever had. Now that him and his penny pinching are gone, we might finally see some spending in this country instead of another rainy day fund.

It’s going to be an interesting by-election, you have Sinn Féin, Social Democrats and Labour all taking up a seat already.

Dublin Central by-election with the Galway-West one so. Who’s the favourite? Fine Gael won’t be able to keep it. Doubt FF are in a shout. SF versus SD/Labour?

    >At a headline level, an Exchequer surplus of €4.1 billion was recorded to end-July. This compares to a surplus of €3.4 billion last year, an improvement of €0.7 billion. The improvement was entirely due however to revenues from the CJEU (Apple) ruling. Excluding the once-off receipts arising from the CJEU (Apple) ruling, the underlying surplus was €0.8 billion, €2.5 billion behind the same period last year. So, while a surplus was still recorded, and despite the benefit of the falling interest cost of the national debt, Ireland’s underlying current expenditure trend was pushing the prudential limits aspired to in the Summer Economic Statement

Congratulations to him, it’s good to see a good person get the job

He’s always been linked with big jobs. Clearly rated quite highly in these organisations.

    A decent skin

I learned we are a nation of saints when every anonymous backbencher TD hounded Donohue as his supporter rounded up a few lads in Dublin, got a van and a drop of diesel and put up posters.

The backbenchers went mad. What van? How many men? How much diesel?

Of all the fake outrage “scandals” we had this was the biggest waste of time.

In modern day Ireland if this is a scandal we have little to worry about.

That’s a shame I always thought he was a relatively safe pair of hands.

A very self serving move, which should be called out as such. Not even a year after the general election…

Disgraceful to see an Irish cabinet minister uses his ministerial positon as a ‘back up’ plan to a new job.

Amazing career path. I remember seeing him come down to look at a neighbours laneway dumping problem in phibsboro when was a councillor. Before he was a TD. That was around 2005. And 20 years later he has skipped to the world bank.

  17. Probably time for a change. Steady hand at the wheel, and great to see him getting such a prominent new job, but I think it’s time for some new thinking – particularly when it comes to overspending by the public service and the very slow speed of delivery. We could do with a McCreevy type figure who has strong views and isn’t going to put up with the usual bureacracy trying to slow everything down.

I guess those trips to the secret bilderberg meetings paid off for aul paschal. Getting out before it all hits the fan

This is the career pipeline that our politicians hope to follow, from national politics and institutions to global ones.

This is why I think they can’t be truly trusted to make decisions in the national interest, when those decisions would be counter to other international interests.
