Summary:
**1. The Shifting Global Order**
* **Decline of the U.S.:** Since 9/11 and the Iraq War, the U.S. has undergone profound internal and external changes. Its influence is waning, as seen at the 2025 APEC Summit in South Korea.
* **Rise of China:** China is pushing for a “Sinocentric world order,” leveraging projects like the Belt and Road Initiative to expand its global power. Geopolitical conflicts are increasingly centered in Southeast Asia.
* **New Power Centers:** Countries like India, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia are asserting greater independence and influence.
**2. The U.S. Crisis and Its Consequences**
* **Authoritarian Tendencies:** Under Donald Trump, the U.S. has shifted toward an authoritarian, technocratically managed system. Democratic institutions are being undermined, with little resistance from civil society.
* **Western Division:** The U.S. has become an unreliable ally. While Europe still depends on the U.S. (e.g., in the Ukraine war), it can no longer rely on shared normative values.
**3. Europe’s Dilemma**
* **Dependence and Paralysis:** The EU remains militarily and technologically dependent on the U.S., especially in the Ukraine war. Yet, it lacks the political unity to act as an independent global player.
* **National Egoisms:** Eastern and Central European countries demand rearmament but resist deeper EU integration. Germany and France show little willingness to cede sovereignty.
* **Failed European Policy:** The German government continues to prioritize national solutions (e.g., expanding the Bundeswehr) over collective European defense.
**4. Habermas’ Assessment and Hope**
* **Vital Integration:** Europe’s political integration is more urgent than ever—but also more unlikely. Only through unity can the EU preserve its democratic values and global agency.
* **Critique of Passivity:** Habermas argues that the EU missed the chance to end the Ukraine war under Biden. Now, Europe risks being crushed between the U.S. and authoritarian powers.
* **Call to Germany:** As the EU’s largest member, Germany must take the lead—but current policies (e.g., rejecting Eurobonds) show little commitment to doing so.
**Conclusion:** Habermas paints a bleak picture of a divided West, with Europe trapped between dependence and impotence. Political integration is the only way forward—but it seems more improbable than ever.
Typical ivory-tower nonsense mixed with Habermas’ usual *doctrinaire* condescension. “National egotisms” are what drives the actions of countries, not high-minded “theoretical” cloudcastles in the sky. Good lord, I wish the hammer of reality would hit these high-and-mighty philosophers for once … maybe they ought to live a real “ordinary” person’s life for a month instead of pontificating on their theories. That should open their eyes.
Again, criticisms towards US for turning authoritarian, but not acknowledging EU is turning that way too.
Habermas: America is declining.
Also Habermas: Europe is more dependent on America than ever.
If we don’t these fkrs are going to pick us off one by one. By pick us off I mean manipulate the feeble minded uneducated twats that have social media & a lobotomy as their sole source of *truth*
