Trump’s peace plan still resonates more with Russia’s desires than with Ukraine’s interests.
I saw a bit of analysis yesterday that said that there were a couple of turns of phrase in the document that are not commonly used in english, but are very commonly used in russian.
Given how fucking useless the US regime and witkoff in particular have been, it would not surprise me in the least if they’d been given the dicument in russian and simply put it through Google Translate.
Looks like the US might have been caught copying someone else’s homework.

That peace plan was never serious.
People need to stop taking it seriously. Not only are the demands unreasonable, its construction is garbage and cannot be considered a legit proposal between states and diplomats.
It was written like a teenager roleplaying in Hearts of Iron IV would.

It didn’t take much reading before I was reminded that those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it. As if the broken promises were forgotten.

Looks bad any way you present it: either you played a messenger for a terrorist or are so disconnected from reality that you produce a pure dogshit proposal and insist on it being good.
Even in the world where this was actually written by the US government, it is the best possible thing you could offer russia that isnt offering all of Ukraine.
It gives russia what it has failed to occupy, it lifts sanctions, weakens Ukraine for future invasions, it makes Europe pay for rebuilding Ukraine.
Nothing in it is good for Ukraine or Europe and it only benefits the invader.
Saying it was your idea just makes the US appear even more blatantly in russia’s pocket.
No, the US did not, not after the evidence I’ve seen. But Trump or someone in the White House really does not want Trump to look stupid. He got played. And Trump would rather pretend his own stupid incompetent people fucked up before he will take the hit to his ego and admit Russia played him.
This is not good, obviously, but Trump will come looking for a headline that makes him look *good* in the wake of this. He will want to let the game play out, let the EU and Ukraine say “well let’s tweak it” or “we need time to review it”. Then after a week or so the pendulum will swing the other way.
Trump is addicted to headlines and attention, the same way that some people are addicted to drugs, alcohol, or gambling. And you can bet your bottom dollar he will want something to give him that next high — and if he’s pissed that Russia played him then he’ll want something that can play Russia back; but only after he’s content that the current offer has been played out “naturally” because reversing on it now would confirm (in his mind) that he got played.
It’s insane that this is how far politics has fallen, at least in the US, but…it’s a silver lining.
edit: as of 5am US time Sunday, Trump has now said “this is not my final offer”. He’ll bring and/or accept something else.

Honest question: why would Russia author this just to reject it? If it was 100% proposed by the US, what benefit does the US get from weakening Ukraine’s military and preventing them from joining NATO?

The clue is that Americans and Trumps base know, or care little, of the world outside “Merica” and that this administration is arguably, the desperate to take advantage of that.
Combine that, with Trumps absolute desire to maintain power and just translating Putzkins demands is easier than actually understanding all of the locations and dynamics involved.

Show that Europe is weak and “Merica” “is strong”
Note that Trump made an election promise not to engage US troops on the ground in any more wars…Putzkin knows this, so the “security guarantees” from Trump are complete BS.
