The government could stop listening to the OBR, if you look at the graph in the article, debt as a percentage of GDP has soared alongside it since its inception in 2010.

Have they not noticed a third of 18 years olds going to university already? They’re already in debt.

That graph is damning. Everyone but the 65+ getting screwed by public decision making.

All childhood age groups down near £3k a year whereas the retirees are all up £1k a year.

(Don’t) invest in the future I guess.

What happens when the currently old pass away I wonder? In twenty-thirty years demographics may start to stabilise if we start investing hard into supporting parents and kids.

Either way it’ll be a rough ride till then.

It’s not hard to see we’re sleepwalking into a financial disaster in this country.

Disproportionately prioritising the Boomers because they vote and there’s tons of them, is going to have dire ramifications from now until about 20 years time. And God knows what’s going to hapen when I’m at retirement age. Assuming I’ll just have to work till I die and never see any benefit of my state or works pension.

Lack of planning for the future from 15 years ago is partly why things are so shit right now. Somebody needs to break the cycle and actually look at investing in tomorrow.

The latest budget may not help but this is surely a culmination of the last few governments’ pandering to keep pensioners happy rather than looking at who we need to be supporting the UK economy in the future. Weve failed to build enough houses, weve failed to properly invest in public infrasturcture across the UK, weve failed to keep utilities companies in check, but sure its the latest budget that will doom gen z to a lifetime of debt…

      End triple lock.

      Tackle energy prices.

      Process Asylum claims quicker.

Decriminalize, tax and regulate some recreational drugs and sex work.

      Land value tax.

Levy streaming service fees like France does. Put into the BBC to cover some of the licensing costs and reduce that price.

Levy online shopping taxes. Invest the money into local businesses.

      Zonal energy prices.

Stop being stupid on HS2 build it in full and shift on to HS3+ Leeds/Edinburgh/York etc

I think this sub does make things look a lot worse than it is and there is a lot of hyperbole being fed from social media and mainstream media.

However the government does need to make some bigger legislative and tax changes rather than fiddling the numbers.

Until the 25-39 demographic start voting then nothing will ever change.

By not voting, they elect against their own interests.

Silly cunts only have themselves to blame really

    9. How can we expect people to raise families with such damning statistics?

“Don’t have what you can’t afford” will end up bankrupting the country

    10. Accomplished__Fun on

Nope. It’ll turn every generation <65yo into one singular generation… Generation debt.

I genuinely think this is how got thinks nowadays:

Are you below pension age? Eff you

Do you have kids? Double eff you

Are you in any way disabled? We’re going to treat you like a leech, eff you.

Wait, why do we have a population growth issue?

    12. CedricTheCurtain on

Like Gen X and Millenials *weren’t* generation debt? Let’s not forget the state of the job market in the late 80s/early 90s, the housing collapse of 2008 amongst other absolutely paralysing factors.

We’re just on loop at this point. And yes, I feel for this new generation coming through because despite being brought up poor, I feel like I still had slightly more than many of this generation has.

    13. swattwenty on

I remember when kids were the future. Guess it cost the olds too much, so fuck them kids.

    14. Personal_Director441 on

funny how all the right wing press and media are framing this as the most crucial budget in a generation and yet the previous 14 years are completely ignored.

    15. ItsDominare on

As long as pensioners continue to be the largest voting group they will continue to get the largest share of attention from all political parties. Young non-voters need to remember that.

    16. PhyllisCaunter on

Boomers have salted the earth and pulled the ladder up behind them. Never has a generation taken so much and given so little. Young people need to get out and vote, even if it feels like a waste of time. It’s the only thing that will ever shift the dial.

    17. Environmental-Sir-19 on

Whole government is a scam at this point , tear it down and rebuild it, the whole government is built on crooks and robbers

This thread, and others, simply shows that those with real money (and real power) managed to – without breaking a sweat – pit a part of the population against another, obscuring more glaring issues.

With GDPPP steadily rising, it should be easy to take care of all parts of the population without inducing stress and uncertainty. Yet here we are.
