Long form article to come to a conclusion that you should wear clothes that you already own more often. I agree that consumerism needs to really slow down but this seems like a lot of bollockology
Some of their stuff does last a long time, some doesn’t. I have the same pair of jeans from them in 2 colours, one denim one green. The denim wore out after 2 months and the green is still going 7months later.
Most of it doesn’t, although I am currently wearing a hoodie I got in about 2018 that is still going strong, unusually thick/warm for Pennies and isn’t falling apart.
The poly-acrylic blend knit was covered in bobbles after a 5 wears… no surprise there. I’m just astounded at the sheer volume of clothing made from these blends… an huge proportion of knits seem to be this kind of blend.
Who is buying these clothes? Because they can’t be getting more than a few wears out of them before binning them.
And I can’t even put it down to cheap clothing… they are in practically every shop and many at 3 or 4 times the price of Penneys.
I have never had a pair of Pennys jeans that last longer than a year of use. It is always the seem just in the backside middle every time. I’ve had multiple other brands over the years since even from cheap ish places and none of them have the same failure rate of their jeans, it is actually insane.
“It depends” is always going to be the answer.
Anecdotally, stuff released at the start of the season is better quality, and men’s clothes are generally better fabric than women’s (useful to know for winter wear, belts, hoodies)
Mens clothes tend to last, women’s clothes become rags after a few washes.
I have some clothes from Penneys for nearly 20 years now that are still going strong (not clothes I wear weekly, but often enough). However, most of the clothes I’ve bought there over the last decade have ripped, bobbled or stretched fairly quickly, or just fit poorly. Their jeans especially are very poor quality. I’ve stopped buying clothes from there for the most part, they’re too expensive now for shit quality.
I’ve a hoodie from pennies must be 15 years old. Once had a t-shirt last 10.
Honestly I don’t find pennys clothes to be too bad in terms of quality. It’s online only retailers that are really bad even expensive ones like asos
I have a few jumpers from 10 years ago that are still in near perfect condition and I wear them often enough
Ever since I was a child i absolutely can not stand being in Pennys, an overstimulation nightmare or something
I don’t think the issue is how long the clothes last exclusively, it’s that the people who buy these clothes only have the intention of wearing them a handful of times. They promote ‘trending’ and ‘seasonal’ clothing rather than clothes that are designed to be worn through changing trends. You just need to have a look in there at the moment at the amount of Christmas stuff, especially in movie themes that are popular at the moment. Who will be wearing Wicked Christmas jumpers next August?
In fairness I have some Penny’s stuff that is over 10 years old, still has a few more years left I reckon
It’s insane to me that they’re calling 5 washes some kind of standard to meet – they should be lasting for 10 times that.
I used to shop in Penneys when I was younger about 15+ years ago and thought I was getting good value because they were cheap, but the clothes fell apart so often that I stopped. We do go there for our young kids though because they grow out of the clothes quickly so there is no point buying expensive stuff.
I have Penneys things bought 15 years ago that are still going strong, but most of the most recent things barely sur I’ve 5 washes now.
A lot of their Secret Possession / Atmosphere branded things were really good quality (I have a bathrobe that’s 20 years aloe and it’s still thick and soft, even brand new ones nowadays are so thin you can almost see your skin through it), but yeah Pennys are not immune to enshitification and most things now are way more expensive than they were a really lower quality.
Still crying out for a Uniqlo here. Nothing like it in that price range
i had a pair of jeans i bought from them about 5 or 6 years ago that i would wear almost daily and only last winter i had to retire them. bought a new pair of jeans last year when the other pair gave out, and not even a year later is one of the pockets ripped and there’s tears at the bottom of the leg. i notice that pretty much everything i buy from penneys nowadays has a very cheap feel to them
I have had some stuff for years and others that last pissing time, after about 3 months some of the runners get holes in them. Underwear can last a year or 2. I got walking shoes for a bit more in Decathlon (€27 instead of like €16) and they have taken at least 2 years of regular use. So I would rather pay a bit more and get durable clothes in Decathlon. The clothes prioritise value and durability over style, not that Penneys is very stylish.
