I would expect them to have their weapons drawn when someone drives a van through a gate and drives at speed onto an international airport’s runway. Its not exactly controversial, is it?…the use of the airport is, should probably keep the outrage focused on where it is deserved.

I’d like to imagine the defence forces would draw their weapons when someone drives through a security barrier and is driving recklessly around a secure area.

If GTA thought us anything, its breaking into a airport is a automatic 3 stars.

“The three are also charged with the criminal damage of a Shannon airport airside vehicle barrier”

Do they still have one of those flimsy aluminium lifting barriers? Because if they do they might consider upgrading it. Might save them some hassle in the long run.

I dont think there’s any controversy around them drawing their weapons. Theybwerent to know who they were.

The real crime here is one of our airports being used to transport materials for genocide.

Hope these 3 legends get off lightly

The only surprising bit is that they didn’t shoot them

Soldiers aren’t trained to ask questions first. Wouldn’t dare do this in most countries

The Irish media have always loved to play up the pearl-clutching at any suggestion that a member of the armed forces would use their weapons.

I always bring up the shooting of John Carty after a day-long siege at his home. He walked out, raised his gun, and he was shot dead.

The media lost their mind. Mentally ill man shot dead by Gardai, what is this country coming to, it’s like Chicago or something, are the Gardai trigger-happy or what?

In response to the scandal, the Minister for Justice brought in experts in siege tactics from the FBI to review the incident and decide whether the Gardai had used excessive force.

The FBI’s report came back with one criticism: “You should have shot him sooner and put and end to it”.

Pity the Irish state aren’t stopping these aircraft from landing in Ireland.

People really don’t understand what happens when someone breaches the grounds of an airport like this. How dangerous it is and the knock on effects. You may have a que of aircraft on approach who now have to all do a go-around, while its a standard procedure it is still adding unneccesary risk to the flight.

Emergency aircraft cannot land either until the airfield is clear. You have a ton of people and vehicles that now need to drive onto the airfield, do a full sweep of the entire area to ensure that theres no one hiding. In a situation where aircraft are coming in to land, and theres suddenly a ton of vehicles and peopel to deal with, the air traffic controllers in the tower are now working their asses off and having to make a lot of very important, serious decisions that affect peoples safety. They have to control every vehicle and aircraft.

A van breaching the permiter fence causes a cascade of problems, each one adding a potential risk to landing aircraft. I can’t even imagine the kind of disaster it woudl cause if they drove onto the field while an aircraft was landing or taking off and they got blasted with the blowback from the engines. What if they drive in and think they are safe and ahelicopter lands / take soff near them? The down force from the choppers causes such turbulence they coudl flip a van into the air, or into another aircraft. Imagine waiting to go to lanzarote, and a van full of idiots get launched into your aircraft lining up to be next on the runway, an aircraft full of jet fuel.

Thats jsut a few htings thatcan go wrong, but get som econtrollers on here and they will fll you in on every potential horrific accident thee idiots can cause doing this kind of protest.

Its is a kind of protest that seriously, seriously endangers the lives of he people either departing or landing. Its fucking stupid and dangerous and if you though about whatyou were doing for a minute you wouldnt do it.
